Front CV assembly replacement alternative?
Hey all,
I need to change the left side front cv axel assembly and dread having to take out the hub bearing. I actually replaced the bearings last year and lined it with anti-seize but I just know murphy's law will make that fun experience a redeux.
My question is, can I replace the cv assembly by simply unbolting the upper ball joint and dropping the knuckle enough to clear out the CV assembly? Obviously, I would remove the axel nut and caliper too.
FYI: I just replaced the upper and lower control arms and struts and that's when I saw the CV in bad shape.
It's a 2006, 4x4, SLT w/4.7
What do you think?
...and..I am going to be replacing the rear shocks tomorrow. If anyone knows the socket sizes needed, that would be an awesome time saver. I think it's 18mm but not sure.

Thanks jkeaton! I really appreciate the quick attention. However, I do not see information on that thread regarding the assembly alternative for the front assembly. I did a little more research and might try an air hammer to the hub bearing this time and do it the right way.
If there is an alternative route, please do respond. I might give it a try first if I see it in time. If not, it might help someone else.

I don't think that you need to remove the hub. Drop the ball joints, top and bottom, and rotate the whole steering knuckle/hub assembly out of the way on the tie-rod end (support it on a 5-gal bucket). Pull your half-shaft and away you go!
