I had that happen on my 96 Neon back in the day. Only on the Neon it would randomly turn off, stay off for a random amount of time, and then randomly turn back on. It was especially noticeable when I hit a bump or a pothole.

To fix it I had to remove the gauges from the dash. They are essentially the front side of a large circuit board. The back of the board had two large plugs. I reran the solder that connected the plugs to the circuit board and it worked fine. On the Neon anyway, the solder joints would get stressed over time and crack so that when there was jarring movement the plug's pins would lose contact with the board.

That would be my best guess...loss of electrical contact somewhere.
