Hello,
Will a transmission from a 2002 4.7l 4x4 Dakota bolt into a 2006 4.7l 4x4 Dakota?
Any issues?
Both are SLT
In the 2006, reverse works perfectly. 4x4 hi and low seem to engage and then back to 2wd.
When you put it in D or a lower gear there is no sound or engagement. If you put it in 4x4 it seems to want to move but doesn't.

edit: Both trucks are automatics
Not sure if it matters, both trucks have 4 full doors

You'd have to wait for the more knowledgeable Dakota scholars to show up, but I believe there is a possibility of the 02 trans being a 45RFE and not the 545RFE.... same case, but the gearing is different. Might not be completely interchangeable, but don't quote me. Can you get at the info sticker on the left side of the 02 trans to see if it's a 545 or a 45?
Secondly, being that these trans are both electronic and hydraulic, start there, at the most basic levels. Battery charge? Crud on the terminals? How old is it? Once you establish that, how is the trans fluid level? Cycle through the gears, and check it in N with the parking brake on.
Any codes?

Short answer, yes they will swap.
You can actually refer to the transmission's sticky in the gen 2 forum. From 2001 on the 45rfe transmission was literally a 545rfe transmission. All they did was swap the TCM. It's not a joke, I put my own money and truck on the chopping block to test it 6 years ago. I took a 2005 jeep GC 545rfe TCM and put it in my 2001 Dakota and suddenly had 5 gears.
It's a Direct swap, you unbolt one and bolt in the other. The harness was identical.
Long answer, refer to the other guy who said check other stuff. Because that sounds like a bigger problem than a computer.
