Got a little mystery problem on my hands, 2008 Dakota stalls for no reason
Hey gents, got a 2008 3.7L V6 Dakota that's got a problem I'd like to solve. I just had it in the shop and the gents there said that they couldn't help me because:
1) They couldn't reproduce the problem while the truck was there (also had rotors replaced), which is not unexpected
2) The problem is not throwing any codes
What's the problem? Basically, my truck stalls for absolutely no reason. It happens seemingly at random with no discernible cause, although I have noticed it tends to happen when the engine revs down, either while in park or in motion (as in, I take my foot off the gas). It's as if I suddenly turned the ignition off. As I mentioned, there are no codes involved in these stalling events, not even a measly dash light to give me a hint. There's no sputtering, no rough idle, nothing. The mechanic who looked at it said that his best guesses were a fuel pump in the process of dying or a crank shaft sensor, but he said the latter at least would throw a code. I've been told to check the mass airflow sensor but my truck doesn't have one of those (whatever sensor is in the intake is clean, I think it's a MAP or temperature sensor). I disassembled the intake and throttle body, all that looks clean, I wiped a very small amount of soot from around the butterfly. My air filter is fine.
Any ballpark guesses? If I had an electrical short somewhere, would that kill the engine without a code? Does the fuel pump idea have merit?
I don't know if it's worth mentioning but I've had a couple of water-related incidents involving this truck driving through deep puddles, getting water splashed up underneath the vehicle, and stalling out with a VERY rough ride home, persisting for a couple of days until the water evaporated from wherever the hell it got in.
