Default 3rd brake light

Me again ..... (Evil laugh)

We're going to re-attempt driving the ol' girl tomorrow.

Have a question. This has a very nice "Leer" cap on the truck bed. The 3rd brake light has never worked. There was a broken 'orange' wire under the truck that we assumed was the wiring for the 3rd brake light on the Leer Cap.

It's been repaired (soldered with heat shrink) but the 3rd brake light is still not working. I've heard tell of a wire in the back of the truck that was designed for an extra brake light. Have not been able to locate it yet. Anyone have any ideas on how to get that 3rd brake light operational? Once the windshield gets replaced (provided it runs okay tomorrow...) I'd like to get this past state inspection. So that 3rd brake light is required.

Why not just tap into one of the tail lights?

Looks like you are looking for a white / light blue wire at the high mount stop light that feeds off the brake light switch. Other wire should be black / orange that connects directly to ground.

Wiring diagram attached.

Nothing more fun than poking around with wiring!

It's going to need some serious re-work. This little snot (what I'll probably name the truck) came with a class 4 hitch assembly, etc... Along with that was the two trailer connectors for the lights and the trailer electric brakes.

The place that installed the LEER cap didn't quite do a good job on the wiring. They used some of those inline crimp connectors in the exposed areas. So, we've got a lovely bumper crop of green goobersnots that will need to be cut out and removed with fresh wiring.

Once that's done, I'll probably jumper in (correctly) to the brake light circuit in the trailer wiring and that should get the 3rd brake light to function. Along with trying to figure out the cargo light that was cobbled.

Least of our concerns... The other main build/recovery thread will list those details.

Still working on that 3rd brake light. Removed the 3rd brake light from the LEER cap. (Nice job on the double side tape they used to secure it)

Found water intrusion into that LED assembly. Most of the LED's found to be rusted off the PCB. I could see a handful of them under the lense along with about 1/2 cup of water.

Meter states we have about 8volts floating when the wife applied the brake pedal. I ran a separate wire to ground and had the same result. It's mimicking a bad ground. However, I believe the issue will be green crustations where they tied into it.

So, looks like either tomorrow (Merry Christmas) or Sunday after we do our Syracuse run, we're going to put it back into the work area and lift the back-end WAY up! Going to clean up the wiring and also chase down a rotational driveline noise/roughness hopefully at the same time. (I'll post a separate one on that topic.)

Have a Super Day!!
