Default 2005 Dakota engine rpm limitation

Hey guys my father-in-law is 75 years old and has a problem with his 2005 Dakota SLT 4WD. The original motor blew up and the engine was replaced. But when he drives it, he can only get up to about 2500 rpm and after that it runs rough and sometime dies. It was in multiple shops for a long time, and they can't figure out what is wrong. They told him he has the wrong computer for that engine that was installed. I have no idea which 3.7 liter motor was installed. Is there a list that will show via serial number which vehicle this engine came out of and if so where is the number plate located on the engine. I am just trying to help him out. Any advice would be appreciated.
