Default 4wd tranny into 2wd truck

My tranny when out on my 2wd I found a transmission that is the supposed to be the same as the one I have in it currently. But the only problem is that it is coming from a 4x4 truck. Am I still able to use that tranny I found and put it in my truck and still have it be a 2wd, or does it not work that way?

On the 2wd transmission, there is an output shaft extension that comes off. It can be bolted to the other transmission after the transfer case is removed. I've done the same thing on my truck.

Make sure your old tail shaft is clean with no garbage from the transmission failure. The actual transmission should be the same but the transfer case will be replaced by the tail shaft extension. ANY metal pieces or nasty fluid will destroy the new transmission.

If I recall correctly, the shaft extension is not actually part of the transmission. There is a seal around the shaft before the extension and no fluid inside. Just like how the transfer case has its own fluid and seals, making it its own sealed unit seperate from the transmission. I could be wrong as it has been many years since I have dealt with swapping a 2wd to 4wd transmission. In either case its not a bad idea to change the filters and fluid from the transmission before it goes into the truck.

Many is the time I've pulled a drive shaft and transmission fluid will come out the hole where it used to be. It has to come from somewhere so while the transfer case is sealed from the transmission, the extension isn't.
