Dodge is good about taking a trans and just beefing it up for heavier applications, would a 68rfe pan bolt on? I mean the two options you posts state for a 545rfe so where are your doubts? I think an auxiliary cooler with a fan would do you way more favors than a deep pan, you need surface area over volume for cooling. I got the AUX coolers on my g56 that give you two extra qts fill, it still runs hot. Ive got hardware for a cooler just need to get around to doing it
It's all about cooling..... The deep pan gives you more fluid volume, with larger surface area to radiate heat to the atmosphere. You can accomplish pretty much the same thing with an auxiliary cooler, if your truck doesn't already have one. Heat IS the biggest killer of automatic transmissions after all.
Well, I don't know about larger pans but heat degrades the ATF, which affects the viscosity and that in turn, degrades the mechanicals. The tow package's larger ATF cooler is an inherent advantage and is something to seek out when buying these trucks. Never fear, as there is a more important step to extend longevity than a large pan and that is simply refreshing the fluid. A drain and fill every 25K will keep that 545RFE fresh and shifting crisply. Also it's important to change the spin on canister filter once in a blue moon, using a Mopar filter, so it has the anti drain-back valve (most aftermarkets don't). Also, please don't flush these trannys... unless by flush you really mean fluid exchange. I don't use any machines. I simply keep doing my 25K drain and fills and shifts are very crisp. Currently nearing 350K on this original tranny and never had any work done on it.
