Those are cab vents. Not sure how they work but probably don't want to cover them up. I know the guy who's install in his "02" was posted here cut out around those vents when he put the plywood sheet in there to mount the amp. He did use some of the old carpet from the back wall or something to make them look appropriate though.

Yeah, those are cab vents...and no, you dont want to cover those up. I posted the "02" install for the Quad Cab truck. Here's the link again. It'll give you an idea of what he did. Great stuff on his page by the way....

Just think things thru Frenchy. It will come together.

Mr. Moore did a great job on his Dak. I'm going to do pretty much like he did. He sent me the plans for his sub box. Think the "05" has a little more room to play with then the "02". Mine is strictly a budget system which I need to get crackin on real quick.
Kenwood KDC-MP5032 w/install kit $199
Profile AP700M $98
Profile AP600 $88
Phoenix Gold ZR6.5 comps $70(Already installed. May upgrade to some CDT's later)
Kicker S8L5 $90
4ga Amp kit $30

Still need to buy: MDF, Plywood, 2 distro blocks, 1 set of RCA's

If I built an opening around it, would it be fine? Like, if I put MDF around it, and had it vent up the back wall? Would that work?

Don't see why it wouldn't work. If they will be seen maybe put some black cloth over them.

Well, what is the purpose of them? I mean, if I built my box around it, but didnt have any way for air to get in, would that be fine? Like I would still have the 2 - 2.5 ft^3 around the vents, would that be fine? Or do I need to have the vents vent into the cabin?

lookin good, try taking a look on my cardomain at Divyne's dakota clubcab, and his amp/sub setup in the back, you could probably get a few pointers from him.

If I ever install a sub it'll be underneath the back left seat, which is where I think my 300w amp that came with the truck is located at. I might want to get another one just for a sub :P

OK, so I want to take off my rear headrests like you did. I can get the bottom of the back panel free, but can't seem to get the top off. I also don't want to break anything so I can put the back panel back on. A little help is needed.

I removed mine. I did not take off the back panel. Shine a light around the top edge of the panel and you will see the plastic push pins. I believe there was four of them, pull these loose. If you damage them you will have to get new ones. I used and open end wench from the top side of the panel to remove the hex head bolts.
