Brief Description:
Disapointed
Comments:
Monday, July 24, 2006 2006 Dakota Laramie Club Cab TRX 4X4 4.7L HO
Loaded? VIN # 1D7HW52J56S654645 Ordered 3rd. week in March took
possession 1st. week in May A nice looking thirty-two thousand plus
dollar mid size truck that I am highly disappointed with and should had
spent that money on a Toyota Tundra. My mistake that I will never make
again. I would had even considered a Ram model if I could have gotten a
club cab body as once offered with passed Ram models. For room and
seating behind the front seats and considering the Ram you are forced
into having four full size doors and a very short cargo bed. Four doors
and a full-sized cargo bed is just too long for most parking situations
and not practicable. The Dakota is one of the most short changed
vehicles if have seen and no way worth the price. I would return it
without hesitation if could persuade the dealer to take it back. I paid
$1,615.00 extra dollars for an anemic high output V8 that recommends
premium fuel to run correctly. I could have had an Asian model truck of
various manufactures with a V6 engine with more horse power, better
mileage and uses regular fuel. Why doesn’t Chrysler understand why the
Dakota models are not selling well and for so many reasons? It has so
much more potential if Chrysler ears would just listen to the buying
public and study the competition. The Dakota can not rest on any laurels
that it no longer has. The mid size market has steadily changed and the
Dakota has not except for its looks. By now you must have noticed that’s
not going to work. Take the time to read what should had been apart of
the top of the Dakota model line (Laramie) as standard items. For $32+k
you are way off the mark. You may not like what being said here but it
all make good marketing sense and take it as constructive criticism that
must not be ignored. • NO PADDING ON SEAT BACKS FOR REAR PASSENGERS IN
THE CLUB CAB. JUST HARD PLASTIC. THE NON CUSHION SEAT BACKS MAKE THE
SEATS INTOLERABLE EVEN FOR SHORT TRIPS. • CAB SIZE IS SAID TO BE THE
ROOMIEST OF ALL PRIOR DAKOTAS YET MY 95 DAKOTA CLUB CAB HAD MORE ROOM. •
NO UNDER SEAT STORAGE IN THE CLUB CAB. PRIOR DAKOTAS HAD VERY HANDY AND
NEEDED STORAGE UNDER THE FLIP UP SEAT CUSHIONS. • NO LEFT FOOT REST FOR
THE DRIVER. THIS HAS BECOME AN IMPORTANT STANDARD IN MOST VEHICLES BUT
NOT THE DAKOTA. • NO POWER WINDOW LOCKOUT BUTTON FOR THE RIGHT POWER
WINDOW. CAN'T LOCK OUT SMALL CHILDREN FROM PLAYING WITH THE WINDOW
CONTROL SWITCH AND LOWERING THE WINDOW INADVERTENTLY. I NEED TO
CONCENTRATE ON THE ROAD, NOT MY DAUGHTER PLAYING WITH AN ACTIVE POWER
WINDOW CONTROL. • NO AUTO DOWN FOR THE RIGHT POWER WINDOW AS FOUND ON
MOST OTHER VEHICLES TODAY. • LACK OF A FULL GAUGE PACKAGE AS FOUND ON
PREVIOUS MODELS OF DAKOTAS AND ON THE COMPETITION’S MODELS. WITH A HO V8
ENGINE THAT IS SAID TO BE GEARED FOR PERFORMANCE YOU LEFT OUT IN PLACE
OF IDIOT LIGHTS VOLTAGE AND OIL PRESSURE GAUGES. IF I GIVE YOU A HUNDRED
BUCKS MORE WILL PLEASE GIVE ME A FULL SET OF GAUGES? I KNOW $32+K ISN’T
ENOUGH UNLESS YOU BUY A RAM. • NO FOUR WHEEL DISC BRAKES OFFERED. I
GUESS WE HAVEN’T USED UP OUR INVENTORY OF REAR DRUMS YET. • ONLY TWO TIE
DOWNS IN THE CARGO BED. REALLY HOW MUCH ARE THESE THINGS? JUST TWO MORE
WOULD REALLY BE KIND OF YOU. • THE INTERIOR DOOR PANELS ARE ALL HARD
PLASTIC WITH NO PADDING WHAT SO EVER. PLEASE LOOK AT YOUR PAST DAKOTA
MODELS AND THE RAM LINE IN BOTH THE SLT AND LARAMIE MODELS. HAVEN’T YOU
READ ALL THE UGLY REVIEWS ON THE CHEAP LOOK AND FEEL OF THE DAKOTA
INTERIOR? THEY ALL SAY THE SAME THING. “FUNCTIONAL BUT CHEAP AND BLAND.
POOR PLASTIC LOOK” DO YOU NOT HERE US OR READ THE REVIEWS? DON’T YOU
CARE? • LEFT SUN VISOR HAS NO VANITY MIRROR. RIGHT SUN VISOR HAS NO
LIGHTED VANITY MIRROR. BOTH SUN VISORS SHOULD HAVE LIGHTED VANITY
MIRRORS. SHOULD I CONTRIBUTE TO A FUND TO HELP THE DAKOTA? I WOULD HAD
PAID MORE TO HAD SIMPLE THINGS LIKE SUN VISORS WITH REAL VANITY MIRRORS.
COME ON AT LEAST LOOK IT AS PRINCIPAL IF NOT REALITY. • NO MENU ON THE
TRIP COMPUTER FOR OPTIONAL VARIABLES. EVEN A STRIPPED JEEP I RENTED HAD
A MENU BUILT INTO THE TRIP COMPUTER. IF ONE WANTED TO CHANGE A VARIABLE
SUCH AS HORN CHIRP OPTIONS WITH USING THE KEY FOB, OR CHANGE THE WAY THE
DOORS LOCK WORK. ONE WOULD HAVE TO PLAY SOME TIMED TURN KEY GAME AND
FOLLOW CRAZY INSTRUCTIONS SUCH AS SIT IN DRIVERS SEAT AND BUCKLE UP TURN
KEY FOUR TIMES ETC. ETC. ETC. I GUESS THE DAKOTA DOESN’T DESERVE A
FUNCTION MENU ON THE TRIP COMPUTER FOR $32+k. • REAR SIDE WINDOWS IN THE
CLUB CAB MODEL NO LONGER FLIP OPEN MAKING REAR SEAT OCCUPANTS FEEL
TRAPPED. IF ONE OPPS. FOR THE HEATED REAR WINDOW AND FORGOES THE SLIDING
REAR WINDOW OPTION YOU LOSE AIR CIRCULATION WITH NO FLIP OUT REAR SIDE
WINDOWS. WHAT WHERE YOU THINKING? • THE PREMIUM RADIO WITH 6 DISC
CHANGER LEFT OUT THE AUX INPUT JACK FOR PORTABLE MUSIC PLAYERS. YOU
WOULD (IF POSSIBLE) HAVE TO ORDER A LESSER RADIO TO GET THIS PREMIUM
FEATURE. • NO PENNY SLOT IN THE CHANGE HOLDER. YES WE STILL USE PENNIES.
STILL THE MOST RECEIVED CHANGE DENOMINATION. • SERIOUSLY NO GLOVE
COMPARTMENT LIGHT? NO CENTER CONSOLE LIGHT. NO UNDER HOOD LIGHT. NO
FLOOR CURTICY LIGHTS, NO OPENED DOOR SAFETY MARKER KIGHTS? WHEN DID ALL
THAT STOP? THANK GOD FOR MAG FLASH LIGHTS. YOU SHOULD INCLUDE A PENLIGHT
FLASHLIGHT IN THE OWNERS PACKAGE. While where at it here, offer what the
buying public is after. I would believe that putting as many units on
the road as possible is your objective. Listen! Offer factory tuned dual
stainless steel exhaust. I case you haven’t notice at least a quarter of
truck owner have this installed after market. Why not beat the other
guys to it. Only Tundra offers true dual exhaust as an option. Offer
side door mirrors with the turn signal LEDs built in. People love these
things and it may turn into a deal helper. If you’re going to offer a
hood scoop make sure it’s actually functional and not just for looks.
Fake anything is a deal killer. Engines! I can’t say enough than get it
together, PLEASE. The 3.7L should be no less than 235hp. The 4.7L should
be no less than 275 hp and using regular gas. The 5.7L HEMI should be
offered as an HO type option at 335 hp for the Dakota with the MDS for
improved mileage. You want great reviews! Tundra, Titian, Tacoma and
Frontier get them all the time. Chrysler has the chance to turn it
around and make the grade with great and much changed reviews. You bet
we all read them. They do say great deal and hold weight towards a
purchase. I bought a Chrysler product because I was an old Mopar fan as
my father was and wanted to give it a shot again. Sorry but thing
haven’t changed much and my purchase was not a wise decision. I feel
like I have to hold the hand of the manufacture and guide them to a
better product for survival sake. I think I got you Chrysler guys
figured out. You think when we see that the Dakota is so short changed
we will automatically just anti-up for a RAM. If that’s your marketing
strategy than your right on the money. The only problem is you ruined
your own mid size truck market hands down. Look why you don’t just drop
the Dakota model altogether and just sell Jeeps, Rams and what ever else
that seems to make you money. If your going to chastise the Dakota this
badly at least let it go out with some dignity it might still have left.
Regards

I'm sorry to hear that you're unhappy with your Dakota, but it sure seems to me like a walkaround and test drive would have brought out 90% of these items, without having to spend a penny.

(And some of them aren't even an item -- for example, there are 4 tiedowns in the box; two by the tailgate, two at the front corners under the rubber plugs.)

Yep your right on the walk around and the test-drive. I did the test drive, even rented one on a business trip. Guess you don't know someone until you marry them. The tie downs need to be certainly more prominent and accessible. Other manufactures make it a selling point or a pointed out amenity that it’s a pickup truck and we give real hooks to strap the goods down. The point of this is the Dakota is extremely shortchanged. The Ram gets all the amenities and the Dakota again gets the short end of the stick even though it cost almost as much as a Ram. Sure, I admittedly made a stupid mistake in my purchase not going to argue that. The Dakota is that redheaded stepchild of Dodge. The points I made in my letter to Dodge are facts and that even items that make extreme sense to either offer them as options or as standard sensible equipment yet can't even be had in the Dakota line. I feel like I bought a garage experiment. Yes, I had a transmission failure in just two days of ownership. The so-called smart transmission at seventy MPH takes a dump into second and stays there until I limped it back to the dealer to have the main control module replaced. Yes, I also had a water intrusion on the right A pillar and had a buddle of rainwater on the right floor mat. Yes, I am in the middle of on going round and round with the service department on why the truck holds back in passing gear like a bad tune up. This is taking me back to the horrible days in the seventies and eighties when Chrysler products where so bad they became talk show jokes. Its dĂ©jĂ* vu that I don’t need at a 32k price tag. Really just compare the Dakota bogs to Toyota bogs and you tell me that there isn’t a problem in Dodge City. .

i really like my dakota....half the things you listed i could care less about like a penny holder? lol
i even got manual windows, i cut out holes in the rug and bam there is storage, and frankly ive riden in a tundra and the v8 didnt feel powerful as my dakota. in fact it can barely handle wieghts like the dakota can. my boss could barely pull a trailer that mine did easily. i agree they shortchanged ya on the HO motor, its pretty sad they made a model that requires premium yet barely draws more power than the standard. but all in all its probobly the funnest truck ive been in and am very much enjoying my purchase (i spent about half what you did so i guess i can be :P )

I'm sure you know.......the 4.7 HO doesn't need premium to "run correctly".....it'll run on regular, but just won't make as much power......but I understand your point

I wish I had $32K to throw around and buy something I wasn't totally happy with. I agree most trucks in this day and age have sacrificed essential interior comforts and options for a better looking bottom line. Other than this compromise, I love my '05 V-8 SLT Dakota. I know GM has Silverados and Sierras that have many of the options you are looking for. Might cost you over $40K.

For 32k you can have very nicely loaded Tundra with more interior room an engine with higher HP that doesn’t recommend premium. A reputation of excellent quality and many of the mention items that you can’t even through money at on a Dakota is standard. Now add to the list with the water leak and the transmission module needing replaced on it second day on the road it now runs like total crap and I believe my wife’s 98 Saturn could blow it away. They want to bring in a factory rep. to take a test drive and find out why if bogs and holds back. Oh yes and of course the “CODES DON’T SAY ANYTHING IS WRONG”! You know what they can do with their codes. I’m so lipid with piece of junk that I can hardly type this. I am ready to total it, take my insurance, and buy a real truck. 32k? Hell it isn’t 32 cents. No wonder Toyota posted sales over Chrysler six months ago as the third best selling brand in America. A forth position that Chrysler brought upon themselves and will never regain.

yeah...you know, a few of those things are true, the gauges and all, i liked the full set of guages before. And there's one thing on the Tundra and Titan and i think the Explorer Sport tracs that I think is totally AWESOME, a power rear window, not a sliding one where 1/6 of the thing opens, but actual buttons and move it up or down like the rest, i saw that on the freeway and was like ZOMGOSH I WANT THAT! lol, otherwise i'm pretty happy with my Dak, i have to agree I thought the V8 was going to be a powerful thing, but I guess you just have to buy it then go some place that will swap it out with a hemi for like $9,000.

Yep makes me wonder, from all I have been reading it seems hardly anyone is happy with the way came from the factory. I see add this add that and it should run right once you do those things. What? It even gets more crazy when the 4.7 seems to be a slacker and people talk about dropping Hemi's in. So I guess like I said before I fell like a bought a garage experiment. About the back power windows on the competition. It’s a great idea. For some reason Dodge decided to forgo the flip out side windows on the club cabs. I guess that would had broke the bank. Maybe Dr. Z needs a bigger house. Oh and has anyone sliced the carpet in the club cab floor to look for that extra storage that use to be a nice amenity on former Daks? This gets better all the time. If I didn't own one I would really find this funny and even entertaining.

Question......why didn't you buy a Tundra and avoid being so upset about what you did buy?
