Default Update on my Truck: Brake Shuddering

I've posted on here a couple times about my vibrating while braking dakota (06 CC 3.7 2WD). Bought the truck new in late July.

At around 1200 miles (which is approx 2 weeks of driving for me) I took it into the dealer for brake shaking/shuddering. They decided to replace the front rotors and pads. They also "trued" the rear rotors. That took care of the problem for about 2 weeks (or roughly 1200 miles).

The shuddering came back. I waited a week or 2 before taking it back to the dealer as I wanted the visit to coincide with my first oil change. It now has roughly 4000 miles on it. This time they replaced the rear rotors due to "excessive run-out". I drove it home last night and drove it in this morning. The shuddering is gone. Time will tell if/when it comes back.

My theory here is that the brakes are probably a bit undersized for the job. This truck probably weighs as much if not more than the F150 I traded in. The front rotors on that truck were huge compared to what's under the Dakota. I put 20's on my truck and I think the extra weight of the wheel package is simpy amplifying the problem. Where I'm having this issues at 1200 and 4000 miles, most others may have them at 10,000 or 15,000 miles. I'm afraid at 10K and 15K, if you were to take it to the dealer, they would probably write it off as a normal wear item. It will be interesting to see if there is a trend.

The good thing for me is that since I drive so much, it doesn't take long to see if the problem is actually fixed. Who knows, maybe I just got a bad set of front rotors AND rear drums from the factory...Coincidence???

What do you guys think?

When I start my truck in the morning my first few stops are like the anti-lock is kicking it then after that it shakes the bed when I try to stop. I have 2250 miles on mine.

Mine started around 15k it was the rear drums,a friend of mine who's been in the parts business for a while says that alot of late model vehicles are having problems with drums and rotors,Detroit is out sourcing more parts than ever and quality control has went to hell,so we're stuck with drums and rotors made of lighter and poor quality material, alot of this stuff is made in China and India,My truck is starting to shimmy again so I'm going to drop it off at the dealer one of these days. But I'm sticking some aftermarket drums when they come out,My friend says a company called Centrix has came out with a part# for the drums but as of yet they're not available, hopefully the dealer will repair my brakes again and by next time they start to shimmy I'll have a choice,It seems nuts that Dodge would stick this crap on the truck and spend all this time and money repairing them, what's the savings in that. But you check the other forums brake problems seem common no matter the make.

There is a TSB on the brake shudder... they will have to pull both rear axles and check if they are the bad ones and replace them with good ones.. also, they will put rear pads and stuff on and maybe machine the front rotors if necessary.. i have 2000 miles on my truck and it shuddered more at highway speeds... i've heard of some that if feels as if the back tires are coming off the ground when you step on the brakes... bad news.... i have about 100 miles since they put back pads on .... will keep you posted...

beers.

We need a sticky on the Brake Shudder issues with all the threads that have been done. My truck is at 11k miles. Over 1k of that is dealer trial and error. Serviced 5 times for the problem, twice doing the TSB that is out. Currently going through lemon law proceedings. Love the truck, it just can't stop.
