tranny problem?!?
Hasn't anyone ever noticed on the automatics that it usually doesn't shift into Overdrive right away when it's super cold out......that's to warm up the tranny
Then when it's warm enough it'll finally shift into Overdrive

Well, I have a little hesitation in the mornings... I live in northern MI and it got down to below zero a couple nights this week. I remote start my truck and it runs for 24 minutes before I am even out the door. I then let it warm up a bit when I first start driving. (like not going of 2000rpm's untill the temp guage moves up.) most of the time the truck is at running temp when I get out there, but this morning it was still cold. It doesnt "slam" into gear or anything, but it is a noticeable hesitation. it has 12066mi as of shut down tonight.

Somebody better call the dealer... They are the ones who told me that "your trucks cooling system has a tow/haul package. The engine help warm and cool those systems..." was it a sales line or what?

The no overdrive in "extreme" cold (around 0*F) is totally normal, and is a built-in feature. OD will "come back" when the fluid reaches a set temperature.

that is not a good idea. your temp gauge is not reflecting the trans temp so your looking to break something by doing that. Your better off starting it, put it in gear for about a minute, and then driveaway softly so all the parts can warm up together

Man, my automotive instructor from high school had me all screwed up... lol.
no, I have just been through this and this is what I learned...
1) the tranny will not warm up until you start driving (with the 05's and above) I have the towing package and the cooler is in FRONT of the radiator not through it.
2) the overdrive will not work until the fluid warms up to a specific temp (I don't know the exact temp)
3) ericemery, bring it into the dealer... they can replace the filters(mine was in the date ranger of 2 TSB's) and the hesitation is not there any more.
4) There is still going to be a whoosinh sound some times. This is the cluch fan (so they say) and it is notmal and dissapears after a few feet.
5) ericemery, the tow/haul for the truck is the following as far as I can remember
a) a tranny cooler that runs in front of the radiator.
b) heavy duty back suspension
c) class IV hitch with electric connections
d) tow/haul button on the shifter. changes shift points for the tranny and turns off overdrive to keep the tranny cooler.

Yes, my 5-45RFE 5 speed does indeed stay out of OD until it's warmed up...You can count on it....Not really an issue...Appears "normal" operation.

Just wanted to let people know (that didn't already know) that it's perfectly normal
