Default 2011 durango push start problem

I just bought a 2011 citadel new from dealer with 125 miles on it. Picked it up friday nite nov. 11, 2011. Left dealer at 8 pm - went 20 miles and car shut off on expressway in heavy traffic - had to pull over 3 lanes to shoulder. Car went dead just like you had turned off ignition, no lites, power steering etc. I tried to start it numerous times - no go. Finally, i thought if i open door like i'm starting out as if i was just getting into the car, it may start - it did. I called dealer from side of road - he said bring it to service in the morning. I drove it the last 15 miles back to the house and went to turn the car off - it wouldn't stop. Pushed the button 8-10 times and finally it shut off.
Took it to dealer next day- they ran tests - couldn't find a problem. I got it back 3 days later and drove it for 5 miles and check engine lite is on - took it back same day- they had it for 5 more days and finally said it was o2 sensor and replaced it - picked it up had it for less than a day and it wouldn't shut off. Called service dept and sales dept while car was running and told them of the problem - even tried to shut it off while they were on the phone - no stop - until i hit the button 7-8 times hard in rapid succession. The dealer took the car back that afternoon - wed nov 23rd. To date nov 28 the car is still in the shop - they called in factory techs and the service manager is going to drive my car home and around town for several days with a scanner hooked in to see if they can catch the problem. They say no one at chrysler is aware of this problem yet here we all are, with the same problem. So i have a $800. /mo payment due and in the 18 days i've technically owned the car i have only had the car 2 days. It was nice of them to give me a used 2008 liberty in place of my $49k vehicle. I hope the service manager enjoys my durango.
Ps - i did love the durango for the 2 days i got to drive it - hope they get it fixed -
anyone else out there have this problem and get it resolved?

Edward, that simply sucks. See if they allow you to trade it back as if the sale never happened and get another one. I would have taken it back Day 1, Episode 1 and never looked back at that particular unit.

Try to do some elimination. You can remove the button from the dash and reveal a 'standard' Dodge ignition. Place the key fob into the recess and turn like a normal ignition. If the manual key experiences the same problem then it is an ignition problem and not the wireless aspect of the enter-n-go system.

Edward,

Sorry to hear about the problems you are having already. There was one TSB I found that may apply to your vehicle. Perhaps ask the dealer if they have performed the flash on your Durango if it does apply. If the dealer cannot locate the problem then I would suggest calling the Customer Assistance Center at 800-992-1997 to document your issue and make sure they got the Chrysler techs involved. TSB below.

I was having starting issues with my Citadel when I first purchased it. Dealer did the re-flash, but that did not help. It ended up being an issue with one of the key fobs. They gave me a new key fob and haven't had a problem since. May be something worth checking out. Doesn't sound like the key fob would be the culprit, but may be worth it to take a look.

Default 2011 durango push start problem

Thanks for the moral support and advice. The dealer tech mentioned the "flash cure" the second time it went in for the problem but was reluctant to do it as they felt the problem was somewhere else in the electric system. That doesn't mean they haven't done it since it went back last week. They have made it a "star case" which they said brings the factory techs into the picture. To date I don't think anyone from the factory group has shown up or weighed in. Communication with the dealer requires me calling 3-4 times before i can speak to somone. If this gets any deeper than it is it will turn into a "lemon case" which is not what I want but I need to be able to put 50k miles a year on a vehicle and not worry if I'll be stranded in the North Country in the middle of a blizzard at 11 pm in February. At this point I feel more confident in driving my 2008 F150 Limited with 200k miles on it than the new Durango - (but boy do I love the way the Durango rides)
Anyway thanks again and I'll keep y'all post on the situation
PS: I have owned a 2000 and 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokees, 2003 Liberty, and a 2000 Durango and never had any problems with any of them. (as well as 2 Ford F150's each with over 190k miles). Thanks again.

Ed

The key FOBs were both unresponsive and when I pushed the button to start it, I got nothing. It was completely paralyzed. I could unlock the vehicle by touching the door handle, but that was all. I couldn't even get the thing out of park. Called Roadside Assistance after getting NO help from the Service Department at the Dealership I bought the Durango from. They couldn't even tell me how to override the shift lock (my wife found it in the manual - no guys ever read the manual, right?). Anyway, got the thing towed to the Dealership and contacted them the next day. They put me in a RAM 1500 Quad Cab 4x4, which I was good with (my wife hated it). So they finally got to look at it on Wednesday and had to go through a reset procedure to get the car started again. They stated that the ignition system was not signaling the key FOBs correctly and that Chrysler needed to complete a software patch for the ignition module. Apparently, they claim this is a problem on all 2011 Chrysler makes with the pushbutton ignition (haven't all other car manufacturers been doing this for several years? Wouldn't they have capitalized on technology that has been around for awhile by selecting one that had the kinks worked out of it?) I've been getting the runaround since last Wednesday. Everyday I call the Service Advisor and get the same story. They have not heard from the Support line from a certain individual with a fix yet (like there was only one guy working this problem). Everyday, I ask isn't there someone else that they could talk to or get more information from? I called the Service Manager Friday and was assured he would look into it further today (Monday). I got a call from the Service Advisor with the same info I got last week. He also got an ear full from my wife when he called our house and she answered while I was at work. So enough is enough. I called the Dodge Customer Satisfaction hotline and submitted a complaint. About an hour later, they called back saying a part was being ordered and would be in Wednesday. Hold the phone, never did they mention that there were any "part" problems. Only a software issue and quite the opposite. They were not authorized to replace any parts because this was a known software issue. So why now are they telling me they are going to replace a part? I told them I was not satisfied with that answer and that they had told me that it was not a hardware problem, but a software problem. They claim they can't recreate the problem. So am I supposed to wait for this car to not start on me again or even worse, my wife and kids while they are out and about? This is ridiculous. This is a $49K retail vehicle (I didn't pay that for it and never would have). Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this type of an issue with any 2011 Chrysler vehicle with the push button start? If so, was it resolved and how?
My 2011 durango did the same thing the dealer sent a tech outas we were stranded after grocery shopping and it was quitting time for them and the tech showed me that you can pull the push button out and use your key to start it and it worked he said I would have to bring it in in the morning and he hooked a computer thing up to it and reprogrammed it and it has been fine ever since I was there about 45 min. now the tailgate door won't operate by the key fob or any ofthe push buttons so it goes in in the morning to see what this is .Hope this helps if it happens again or to anybody else a small knife or screwdriver to pry the button out helps

Welcome too the forum. The method for removing the start button is listed in the manual. In which you would remove the key from the fob and use the tip of the key to pry out the push button. However, I do own a 2012 and this method is from my manual, not sure if it's the same in the 2011

I just got off work at 4am and had this same problem. Had to get a ride to friends house bc the tow truck guy couldn't get it loaded on the trailer thus leaving me thirty min from my house. It being so early I couldn't go to dealership until it's open in tour hours. Went online and found out that you have had the same problem as me. I have had my citadel 2011 Durango for a year and a half and had no prefeious problems until now. I'm hoping they will be able to figure it out! I took the push button out and tried the key fob and it still didn't do anything! Thanks for posting

Default 2012 Durango Electrical X 2 Citadel and Crew

Bought a 2012 Citadel and had electrical issues. The dashboard would go nuts and set over 20 trouble codes and you could not start the car. The only way to start it when it acted up was to put the back hatch up and down twice. My dealership bent over backwards to help me. This is not a dealership issue. This is a factory issue. The tech has spent i guess over 10 hours with Star on this. Pages of notes. Several parts and computer upgrades later, they took the car back and I thought I would get a used durango so I would not have the issues.

I then bought a 2012 durrango crew (ex Enterprise car). It started saying key not detected. The car would not start and I could not start it with either fob or using the emergency start (removing the cap on the switch). I took it into the dealership, they were going to contact Dodge. I went to the store and got back in the car, was driving down the highway and the car says "key has left the vehicle". I do not know what the key has to do with Elvis, but it is back at the dealership. They have 1 fob on order. If either fob could not start it, why replacing 1 fob will make a difference?

I hope someone from Dodge can chime in on this. There are star cases on both of these cars. I think we as buyers need to know from the factory what we are up against.

Is this fixed in the 2013's or should I be looking at another brand of vehicle. I am in a 24 x 7 business and can not be left on the road.
