I typically go by what the manufacturer recommends when putting gas in a vehicle. I have a 2012 R/T and have been putting 89 in it since I got it last month, with the only exception being I filled up once with 93. Will running 93 in the vehicle cause any damage long term? I've heard that since the engine isnt rated for that octane, the gas wont burn off and will leave gunk behind.

Oh, and hi! First post :-)

the only damage running a higher than recommended octane will do is to your wallet

Thats no damage at all then...where I typically get gas, BJ's Wholesale, 93 is actually cheaper than 89 at regular gas stations, by about .20 a gallon

I would think the 93 would only help with performance if your looking for that.

Funny on my brothers 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee the manual specifically stated NOT to run higher octane than 87, since it would cause the engine to run hot for long periods of time.

I'm tossed b/c my local Costco only sells 91 or 87, so 87 will be for me.

Yes, altitude does play a part. 85 In Denver will burn about like 88 at sea level; that’s why higher altitude areas generally don’t sell 93 octane.

I think it prefers nitrous! I've been pondering something small like a 50-75 shot

This response actually applies to some earlier topics, but I felt compelled to chime in. I've ran 91/93 since I bought the vehicle (about 5 tanks). For ****s and giggles, after reading on this thread last night, I put a tank of 87 in this morning. I've driven about 35 miles on this tank and will announce that there's no doubt as to a significant loss in performance using a lower grade fuel. Granted, the performance return in comparison with the additional cost simply may not be there for some people. But, for me, the additional $6 a tank is worth it!

I use the cheap stuff, i don't need the extra power.
As for the "power" over octane.
Because these cars vary the ignition timing, they can sense what octane is in the car(done by whether or not the car knocks and then advances more from there) they will advance the timing and create more power. Its a really easy way to get more power out of your vehicle. I used to tune my subaru and as long as i wasn't knocking I would give it more timing. It makes a huge difference.
