Performance Exhaust Drone, Suggestions
Hello everyone, I've been following this forum for a while but this is my first post. I really appreciate all the great discussions on here.
I picked up my D-R/T just before X-Mas and have wanted to improve throttle response and acceleration. So, when I saw the performance exhaust video on You Tube from Margate FL, my home town, and I went to see them.
I got a similar setup, 2 1/2" into an X-Pipe and back to... I went with the larger 18" muffler because I was concerned about interior drone. However, the sound outside is very mild, more than I expected, but I still get an annoying drone when under power between 2000 & 2500 RPM. Not that bad when I'm driving alone, I usually have the stereo going and I like the sound of performance. But, when the wife and kids are there the stereo is off and drone becomes annoying. As you can imagine, the wife says I ruined the truck.
I'm hoping there are some others that have done similar mod and can share possible solution to my dilemma. The guy at CM Performance said I could add a resonator to make it quieter but I did some research and different resonators affect different frequencies at different flow-rates and where they're placed along the exhaust path. How do you calculate all that to select the right resonator?
Thanks ahead for your feedback.

ummm, new wife??
j/k man,
the dynamat sound dampning stuff sounds like a good idea, although the surefire answer is to get rid of the 'performance' exhaust and put something closer to stock on there (it sounds to me like you put pretty close to true duals on there is that correct? if so you should have two mufflers, one for each side)

Thanks for the reply's.
Yes, I thought about adding some sound barrier in the back. What flavor Dynamat did you use and how did you attach? I don't know if it will hold underneath long term. Was the sound in the cabin a drone or just loud? The resonant sound of drone can be difficult to isolate.
I do have true dual exhaust, mufflers are in the back. Wondering if I add some high flow resonators closer to the Cats if it will be enough to cancel the drone. I measured and it resonates around 125-150 Hz.
The Wife stays, she's a keeper.

I took up the rear cargo area and sub. Lifted up carpet and applied under that. I had some just laying around so I put it in so i am unsure style. This I feel will be the easiest way for you to possibly reduce interior noise.
Thanks MJ, I think I'll go for the Dynamat Extreme. Looks like it will cost about $200-$300 to insulate the back including 3rd row. Even if I end up adding a resonator later it will only help to keep the interior quiet.
Cheers!
Cheers!
On the chargers the mufflers are by the cats and the resonators are at the back. Same for the Corsa exhaust which reportedly has no drone. Have you tried driving in manual shift mode? It takes the car out of MDS mode which cuts way down on the drone.
