First Time Towing
Well let me say I am very happy after our first trip towing the camper. We went to Mark Twain Lake over the last weekend for 800 miles round trip and 600 of that towing our 3000 lbs pop up camper. I have several trips under my belt with the camper over the last couple years but this is the first since getting the Durango. We have the 3.6 liter engine and AWD on our Crew Lux and i was very surprised with the over gas mileage we received. I averaged 19.6 mpg on the trip computer across all 800 miles. When taking trips minus the camper we normally see 22 or 23 mpg so the 19.6 was a pleasant surprise. I was also very happy with the way the camper pulled. I experienced ZERO sway and very little noise coming from the hitch. We had towed the camper in the past with a 3.0 liter 2004 BMW X5 which did a very good job but at times I felt the camper was a bit much. We had lots of noise coming from the hitch and sway would kick in around 65 to 70 MPH. None with the Durango. We also would only get about 16 mpg with the smaller engine. I am looking forward to our next trip in August down to Lake Shelbyville, we ought to see a bit better mileage as the roads are flatter. Anyways I am very happy with our purchase of the D.
Towed two bikes down from Virginia to Florida, and the D never missed a beat. About the last 200 miles I noticed that the MPG went from about 16 down to around 10. Turns out the right tire on the trailer was under inflated and had worn on the outside and inside. Changed out both tires to brand new and have them properly inflated for the trip home this weekend
I just completed my 2nd towing vacation with my 2011 Durango Crew Hemi AWD. My current trailer is a 28' and weighs in at about 6800-7000#, depending upon how much stuff the wife packs. My overall mileage for the trip was 9.2 mpg. It pulled very well and I never experienced any handling problems.
My biggest surprise was the mileage change. This trip was with a new RV. Our previous rig was 25' and weighed in @6800 loaded. I pulled it to Houston over the Xmas holiday. My round trip average was 12.9 on that trip.
I was kinda surprised at the mileage difference based upon the minor weight, but then I realized that the frontal area of the new trailer was larger and steeper.
Everything considered, I am still very impressed with the Durango.

I was also very impressed with the MPG of the V6 when towing.
I pulled a steel car hauler, with my '05 GTO, and supporting track tools/parts, and averaged 16.? MPG. The load was right at 6000lbs.
I completely expected 10-12 MPG pulling this kind of weight, and was pleasantly surprised at both the MPG, and how well it handled the load. Like you noticed, no real amount of sway ever crept in. I chalk this up to the trailer anti-sway programming included with the factory tow package, but who knows?

Here is the Duragno and Boat. I don't know the exact weight, but the max trailer weight is 5500lbs and the trailer itself is somewhere around 800-1000 lbs.
The durango tows it fine. It has a different feel than my F150, but the engine had no trouble pulling it (up hills and around curves maintain 55mph) and the brakes stopped it no problem. My only qualm is that I can hear the surge brakes much more than in the truck and all you can see in the review mirror is the boat behind you, nothing else. It will be interesting when I go to back it down the ramp.
