Default Transmission temp

I have a 2012 Citadel AWD with the hemi. I'm going to be doing a lot of towing and like the trany temp gauge. But I don't know what the normal operating temperature range is? Does anyone know what the range is and at what temp should I start to take extra precautions (before the light comes on!)?

Thanks in advance.

I just did some towing for the first time yesterday. Pulling approx. 3000 lbs. At one point in the trip there is a climb over mountain pass. I would guess 3-4 miles uphill. This is one of those with 25 mph switchbacks etc. Lots of throttle in 3rd gear.

Temps started out at 168, and ended up at 201

I noticed that the temp gauge also has a "scale" at the bottom of display. 201 degrees was still barely above center, so I would assume this is fine.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable can verify.

On this scale, 300 degrees is max.

I noticed the scale and I agree that 201 is probably just fine. Hopefully someone will know where the scale should turn red. Thanks for the info.

Wayne,

See Below.

  • Trans Over-Temp Indicator Lamp-On Message - Each time the cluster receives an electronic trans over-temp indicator lamp-ON message from the TIPM indicating that the fluid temperature is 135 °C (275 °F) or higher, the transmission over-temperature indicator will be illuminated and a single chime tone is sounded. The indicator remains illuminated for about five seconds, until the cluster receives a lamp-OFF message from the TIPM, until the cluster arbitrator logic determines that another display request has priority, or until the ignition switch status transitions to OFF, whichever occurs first. The chime tone feature will only repeat during the same ignition cycle if the indicator is cycled OFF and then ON again by the appropriate lamp-ON and lamp-OFF messages from the TIPM.

Wow, 275 degrees... I bet the floor boards would start getting warm inside the vehicle at that point... It was 109 degrees on the black top here the other day and with only ~250lbs of cargo and myself (240lbs) my trans temp at highway speed (>65mph) was just 161 degrees.
