Headlight conversion
Hi to everyone
I have a Durango Crew 2012 that comes with a Halogen Headlight. But ive seen the R/T or Citadel that comes with OEM HID Headlamps.
I want to know to make this conversion, I only need to buy the OEM Citadel or R/T headlamps ? or I need more things, like wiring or something else.
My crew is brilliant black, so the R/T OEM headlamp with black bezel would be great. Do anyone has the P/N of that item, so I can order it to mopar.
Here are some pics.

And thats what I want to convert to.

I haven't done this as mine came with the factory HIDs, but there have been past discussions of this. The factory HIDs would require the headlights themselves, the special wiring, the control board, relays - and the computer would probably need to be set up for it by the dealer. There may be other components as the HIDs are auto leveling with the suspension. This is one of many features people desire after they buy their Durango, just to find out how complicated and expensive it would be.
An aftermarket setup would not be auto leveling, may require cutting, and would also require new wiring to handle the load. Without auto leveling you will be annoying everyone and will get brights flashed at you continually.
Another option some choose is to put higher wattage halogen bulbs in. This risks melting the housing and the wiring, though you may be able to get away with a slight increase in wattage. Also, unless the bulb is identical in dimensions to the factory bulb, the beam may not be compatible with the housing reflector and you might be emitting a huge splashing beam that will again annoy other drivers and get their brights - or an equipment violation. Lastly, I'd suggest not putting in bluish bulbs as having blue bulbs on a vehicle could get you an equipment violation or an officer impersonation charge (though unlikely).

I would like to warn you that HID's are expensive, when I bought my durango that was an option I DIDN'T want. I got lucky, and found one that didn't have it, yet still had the options I wanted. I agree the black bezel would look nice, but not enough for me to get HID's(I have had them on 2 other vehicles FWIW)
Maybe bake your housing and paint the inside black. A lot of subaru owners do that.

Under what title the thread is under ??
Thanks
I feel I should add my input to this thread. I have done both a "retrofit" as another member described subaru guys doing, and also have done the OEM hid conversion. the problem with our headlights is the permaseal used to seal the headlights. They will not bake. I did my retrofit by dremeling the headlights, then mounting hid projectors. They worked great but were not "perfect". Then I sent another set of halogen headlights to a professional retrofitter, who also ended up dremeling the headlights open. He custom paint the bezels black, and mounted hid projectors in both the lowbeam and highbeam. These headlights were insane! they were so bright but not blinding bright to oncoming traffic. About 2 months ago they started having some condensation building up in them. I then contacted scottinaheat about hid oem conversion. I ended up having to buy oem hid headlights (brand new on ebay), the drivers repair kit, and I ended up using my hid harness from my previous headlights since I never had any issues or lights come on the dashboard with it (if it aint broke dont fix it). I used 2 of the leftover wires from the drivers repair kit to create a harness for the passenger side, basically found the 2 wires that power the ballast on the headlight harness, plugged in the 2 wires, poured in some silicone rtv stuff, let it dry and installed the headlight.
Ive now been using the OEM hid for about the last 4 weeks, it is nice, and is considerably brighter than the oem halogens, but for the HID guru's it is lacking. My quad hid headlights are off the truck to be repaired by my retrofitter. Once I get them back I might try and sell them because ultimately I plan to sell the truck in the near future, so if by chance anyone is interested here is a link to my actual retrofitted headlights.
