Default Hitch-receiver question

Hi Guys, perhaps this is just a general trailering question moreso than a Durango question. But hey I tow with the D so I figure I'll try asking.

I have a hitch that fits a little loose into the back of the receiver (or whatever it is called) on the back of the D. There's about an 1/8 of an inch of play. The thing can go up or down maybe 1/4" at the ball so when you go over bumps you can hear it clunk.

Is this normal towing with a D? I recently went on a 12 hour trip in someone else's pickup towing a boat and couldn't hear a thing. But well that was a full size Chevy pickup so maybe we were just more isolated than I am in the SUV.

Most hitches rattle when nothing is attached. With a properly weighted trailer attached, most are quiet. Certainly, the weight of the boat kept things quiet.

You can buy a specialty hitch that is quiet, remove the hitch (from the receiver) when not towing, or wrap the hitch with electrical tape (or something similar).

The rattling will be much more pronounced in an SUV than in a truck. Look around the garage, you probably have something laying around that will work just fine.

I bought a quiet hitch. Expensive but one of the best investments on a 1700 mile trailer haul! They also sell a quiet hitch adapter that goes on your normal hitch adapter stops it from rattling.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the input. Trailer weight (or lack thereof) probably is a factor. It's a lightweight 4x8" trailer I use for yard waste. Not much tongue weight as all.

The surge brake tounge on my boat trailer makes a lot of noise when driving the D. It sounds like its going to rip the bumper off sometimes. I couldn't hear any of that noise when I towed with my truck.

Several months ago I bought a hitch-mounted cargo carrier. It came with a "hitch tightener" . . the purpose is to keep the carrier from bouncing around and swinging side-to-side, but something like this would work good to take up all the clearance in your hitch, eliminated any clunking.
