Default Stupid question

I know this is a stupid question but need to ask anyway. I have a 2012 Crew with the 6 cylinder. I ordered a hitch and wiring harness last week and it came in one day. Took about an hour to install both items...was very simple.

I know others have said they had to take their durangos back to dealer to have them adjust the computer for the added towing harness. After installation I went to my boat storage and hooked up boat....all the lights and tail lights worked fine....it being daylight and being alone I couldn't check to see if the brake lights would work.

Here's the question: If all the other lights were working including tail lights could I assume the brake lights were also working. I've got to take the durango to dealer today to have engine light checked and wondered if you folks thought I needed to have them set the computer for the towing.

Working lots of hours so haven't had a chance to go back to storage to check the brake lights.

You need to check the brake lights too. I've never heard of adding a wiring harness causing the computer to throw a code, but as sesitive as these computers are these days, I suppose it is possible. Call the dealer and ask service, or if your brake lights work, wait to see if you get a code.

Do you have a large flashlight or tube (Maglite). You can place the object between your driver seat and the brake pedal and move the seat forward until the seat holds pressure on the brake and then walk back and check.

Alternatively, prop a mirror up behind the trailer and step on the brake yourself.

David,

No question is a stupid question. If you are not able to check the brake lights yourself or have someone check them for you, review it with the dealer when you go in today to make sure all of the wiring is working properly.

It's better to be safe then sorry.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions. It so happened that our system went down so we got to go home early. Waited till almost dark and went back to boat storage...I could see the brake lights against the back wall.

Man, I'm glad...did not want to go to dealer. Also found out that my engine light was no big deal...had to do with fouled plug or something simple like that. I think they must have reset it because when I cranked it back up the light was out. Runs smooth and all gauges show everything is normal so I'm not worrying about it.

Thanks again.

just wedge an umbrella or something in between seat and brake pedal and adjust seat till breaks are on...then get out and check for yourself
