Default DTE fuel mileage info. Goes away!? Why

Hi All
New guy, 2013 Durango Crew Mineral Gray 5.7 Hemi, loaded with black leather, nav, etc...
Love it so far, just hit 1000 miles.
This site actually helped me in my choice of a new suv so thanks all.

Question.
When I look at the info screen on the dash, under mileage theres a DTE (distance till empty) area.
Once the fuel is low and the fuel light comes on, the DTE goes away and says "low fuel".
What the hell.... Its at this point I would really want to know my DTE!!
Is there a way to show DTE when low fuel is on?
Thanks!

Larry - Welcome to the forum!

I know what you're talking about. Seems my truck does it as well. But I'll be honest, I don't really run my D that far down when it comes to gas. When I have a 1/4 tank left, I go fill it up.

I remember when the light did come on and I saw the dte disappear. I thought "crap, time to really get gas". I'm sure somewhere in the manual, it tells you how much fuel you have in the tank when the warning comes on, but I haven't bothered to look.

Welcome Larry... I agree its an annoying feature I guess once the DTE falls under 50 miles it doesn't register any longer.

Larry,

Congrats on the new Durango!!!

Because the DTE can vary widely by the driving conditions at any given time the low fuel message will come on when the current driving conditions dictate that you have less than 30 miles to empty. When you get that low it is all a crapshoot since miles to empty can be greatly reduced if you suddenly get caught in traffic or are idling and not moving. Below is what the manual says.

When the DTE value is less than 30 miles (48 km)
estimated driving distance, the DTE display will change
to a “LOW FUEL” message. This display will continue
until the vehicle runs out of fuel. Adding a significant
amount of fuel to the vehicle will turn off the “LOW
FUEL” message and a new DTE value will display.

Older vehicles use to count all the way down in DTE. Then a few knuckleheads started running out of gas when DTE would say about 5-10 miles left. They were saying it was the manufactures fault and they need to be reimbursed.

So to fix the issue the car companys just put a minimun on what the DTE would say before going into "Low Fuel" usually around 40 miles

So combine this with what Dodge Cares mentioned and you have your answer.

Kills me that people don't relize how the DTE system works. Have they not noticed that it varies widely based on driving conditions. So could change dramaticly at any time.

Gotcha, And I agree, people that souly rely on the DTE till the last drop are nuts. I fill up when ever I need gas, and generally I like to run down low and then get a fresh full tank of fuel.
I suppose when the light comes on thats when I'll be heading to the gas station!
Thanks all for input.
