I have been around cars long enough too know the difference bt what is in my head and better overall driveability. I didn't say the D makes more horse power with Shell, I am referring to part throttle response, overall driveability and get up and go.

Quality gas does make a difference in the driveability of a vehicle. I put no name crap 93 gas in my Shelby once and noticed a drop in performance for the entire tank. Sluggishness went away after a Sunoco 93 filll up.

I have owned about 30 personal cars and 6 take home since I started driving , including 10 second 442, an 11 second 442 and 540 RWHP Shelby GT500. Even my tuner, who is very well known in the Mustang world and is a close friend, agrees that quality gas will make a difference in the driveability of both a race car and daily driver. Always noticed my street and race cars ran better with Shell, Sunoco and Amoco vs the local no-name brand. I have a ton a friends that have drag cars and performance street cars and none of them use no-name/unknown-local gas in these cars. I guess it is all in their heads too.

Others have chimed in on this thread with similar experiences and views, so I am not the only one. So in conclusion take it for what it's worth, try it or don't try it but after the last fill up with 19 Petroleum and the current fill up Shell, I am sticking with Shell or another top tier gasoline.

Here's some of that great gas being pumped into my Shell station ;-)

Couldn't resist guys. Took this picture just today before I drove away with all that awesome "driveability" :-)

The kenan Advantage Group, Inc: operates a fleet of some 3,800 tractors and 5,300 tank trailers from a network of more than 100 terminals in approximately 40 states, and makes deliveries to all of the continental US, Canada and Mexico. Investment firm Littlejohn & Co. owns the company. (Google search)

They dont make the gas they just deliver it to the stations.....HA couldn't resist either!!!

That's correct! What you didn't know because I didn't want to ruin the joke is that he was actually delivering Shell gas.

But in all seriousness, think about the implications. That truck also delivers no-name gas to your local 7-11. And as often as not, that "no-name" gas could be Shell, Exxon, or some other major brand that was purchased on the open market. And every time that truck makes a delivery (Shell or otherwise) it's not washed out before the next load.

What's the difference between regular gas and top tier?
Detergents

Petrol, as delivered at the pump, also contains additives to reduce internal engine carbon buildups, improve combustion, and to allow easier starting in cold climates. High levels of detergent can be found in Top Tier Detergent petrols. These petrols exceed the U.S. EPA's minimum requirement for detergent content.[citation needed] The specification for Top Tier Detergent petrols was developed by four automakers: GM, Honda, Toyota and BMW. According to the bulletin, the minimal EPA requirement is not sufficient to keep engines clean.[10] Typical detergents include alkylamines and alkyl phosphates at the level of 50-100 ppm.[4]

Top Tier fuels feature more of these additives than regular gas. In 1995 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set a minimum standard for gasoline additives. Since then, refiners and fuel blenders have actually reduced the amount of detergent they put in fuel by about 50 percent. In the long run this cutback has impacted the ability of vehicles to meet emission standards.

According to Bill Studzinski, Fuels Technical Specialist at General Motors, a number of OEMs saw this problem and got together to push for higher levels of detergency. He said Top Tier gasoline is a better fuel for engines, and that it takes the mystery out of what a good fuel is and what an average fuel is.

Top Tier gasoline must contain more deposit-fighting detergents, it also must be sold at all of a fuel marketer’s stations and across all grades of its gasoline, from 87-octane regular to top-of-the-line premium. Additionally, to earn the seal of approval fuels cannot contain metallic additives, which are potentially harmful to automotive emissions-control systems. Simply put, Studzinski said Top Tier gasoline is “a higher level of detergency, which keeps your engine running optimally.”

And least anyone think they can tell the difference:

"Top Tier is all about keeping engines clean. As far as fuel economy is concerned, it should perform identically to gasoline with lower levels of detergent, so don’t expect a big efficiency boost."

It's really about longevity.

The same trucks may deliver fuels to different stations but that in no way indicates same products. Different manufacturers add different additives to the gas and have different process they refine by.
I agree that shell has always been a better quality product as well as Amoco Ultimate which contains techron fuel cleaner.
