Diesel Durango?

On a pure economic basis you are 100 percent correct.
The only positive to diesel in a Jeep (or Durango) I would think is if the owner hauls a boat, trailer or some such around on a regular basis. With that stuff you need some grunt, especially in hilly terrain, and the diesel could be a real plus under those condidtions.

I have also heard that towing with the diesel offers better mpg than the v6, that being said I bought my 11 with towing package... have never towed anything. I guess the peace of mind that I can is nice though...

I agree somewhat... even you recoupe $3500 of the $5000, thats still 100k plus miles that need to be driven to break even. if you were to drive 17k per year it would still take almost 6 years for it to "start paying back". most of my cars are lucky to see 2-3 years with me.
Im not knocking the diesel, I want it myself... maybe if jeep offers a "rebate" similar to bmw's rebate last year that made negotiated the $4500 cost of getting a activehybrid. Bmw couldnt move the cars because the $4500 (i think) cost did not justify the the 2mpg increase. Its apples and oranges comparing the 2 cars, but I think the diesel is attacking a niche market.
I could be very wrong though it appears the x5 gas vs. diesel is a $9k premium and seems to sell pretty well for a 4-5mpg gain. my brain is starting to hurt thinking about this...
