Navigation: Electronics vs. paper?
What is the preference for the guys here?
I appreciate the accuracy and speed of the GPS but get very frustrated trying to read such small screens. Plus the tiny screens give you absolutely no perspective on where you are in relation to other land marks, which might allow you to plot out a different route. Its kind of like reading a map through used toilet paper tube. For those reasons I still always carry my State Farm atlas when on long trips. I guess it is my security blanket.

Landmarks? I guess I've never been on a road trip where my route was affected by landmarks. It's always been the most direct way from point A to point B. I've driven from the North east to Florida and from the North east to Northern Michigan several times.
I usually go on google or yahoo maps at home first because you can easily explore alternate routes by dragging a point on the route. Sometimes the most direct route has other disadvantages that the GPS device doesn't know about.
Then I use that printout from my home computer as a general guide and use my smart phone's map app while driving.
The new D is the first car I've had with built-in navigation and I haven't had a chance to use it much yet. I'll probably just rely on it more and use the smart phone less.

I prefer the quality and intelligence of my android phone's nav, but I use the D's GPS all the time for it's ease of use/reading while driving. I do wish they would set it up so a passenger could set a destination while I drive. Even when I know where I am going it is handy at times to have the ETA calculation.

Yo Steve, keep me up to date with this gizmo you are getting !
I always have an Atlas in the car or truck on road trips out of state. especially needed in the WV mountains as the GSP wanted to sent us down a dirt road while I swore I could hear the sounds of a banjo playing the theme of the deliverance. HAHA
Then the GPS kept telling us to ? Make a legal U-turn for the next thirty miles....no kidding.
