Default Oil usage

I change my oil every 5000 miles in the Durango. Checked my oil today about 15 mins after getting home.

The dipstick shows oil in the lower hole but not in the upper hole. Is this 1/2 qt low? 1 quart low?

It has 13,800 miles now. I've run Mobil 1 5w20 since 3,000 miles when I bought it in May 2013 as a dealer manager demo.

How about you other hemi guys. How much oil do you use?

out of curiosity, why does someone want to put 15w40, the factory fill for a cummins diesel, into a 5.7l hemi where factory fill is 5w20?

If you put that oil in the 5.7 D you will no longer have MDS
Never put the wrong oil in your D.

I dont use more than an 1/10 of a quart and that is what I catch in my catch can. So I have no leaks. What Brand oil are you using?
I use Penzoil Ultra or Platinum and have no issues. I had an issue with Mobil 1 in my older D it would use about 1/2 quart, when I switched it to Penzoil it all went away.
If you dont have a catch can and you drive spirited frequently it could use about 1/2 qt between changes .

The only time my D uses oil is when I park it on an uphill incline. When I start it later, I get a big cloud of blue smoke. If this happens a coupe of times, it is slightly low. Taking it in Friday for the new oil pan fix, per the service bulletin.
