14 Durange Limited -After market DVD integration
So I've left the world of Nissan Titans and joined the world of Durango. So far I am thoroughly impressed! The ride is a 14 Limited with a V6. Fully loaded minus DVD and safety driving features. We have the second row captains chairs.
We drove several brand new left over 13 models before we stepped into a 14. I could tell an immediate difference in the drivability with the 8 speed paired with the V6. It was a no brainer and immediately knew we were going to buy a 14. The wife who could care the F less about even noticed a difference in how it drove. I'm sure that will rub all the pre 14 owners the wrong way based on other threads I've read.
So I'm already looking to do some add ons, first being a DVD player. If I would have opted for the factory system would it have played movies in 5.1 surround sound. I can't really find any technical information on the Uconnect system. We have the center channel in the dash and has the surround option with in the settings of stereo. How would an aftermarket dvd system integrate to Uconnect? I'm thinking about upgrading the entire system anyway, but don't want to get that conversation started in this post.
I will say and again some will argue with me the Alpine system in the 14 seems to sound better "fuller" than what we heard in the 13's. Upgrade vs. upgrade so we comparing apples to apples.
So can anyone point me to any useful threads of someone that successfully integrated an aftermarket dvd player that would play 5.1 sound. My wifes 2007 Mazda CX-9 Bose centerpoint system would play my SACD and DVD audio discs. It would also decode DTS encoded discs. I'm not a fan of Bose for music but for movies in a car they did a pretty great job. I have a feeling I'm going to have to upgrade the system integration devices to get the sound features I want.
any advice?

My advice, spend the money on a couple iPads for the kids to each watch and DO what they want. Netflix and iPads go a long way for kids in road trips. And if you just do the wifi only versions you can use a phone as a hotspot for them.
That's what we do now. After spending money on a rear entertainment system on our last vehicle that we never really used I promised myself I wouldn't do that again.
Individual iPads is the way to go. For us at least.
Maybe for you too.

Yup same here, we buy all the new kids movies as they come out on DVD, I burn them straight away. I have two Asus 10 inch transformers I just load up with kids movies and they can pick what they want. Hotspot can be choppy with netflix etc, so this works best for me. The tablets have bluetooth of course, so makes for some quiet time for everyone.
The problem with this idea is that every time I get out of the vehicle i've got to take the ipads out of the mounts so that nobody tries to break into my car when they see them. Plus there's the issue of power cords everywhere.
you could tuck and hide power cords just as easy as they will hide them on the integrated. As far as hiding them when leaving vehicle you could always just get a seat colored pillow case and throw over headrest or just unmount and throw under seat. Will you use all the time or just for roadtrips?
