The sensor can 'see' when you cannot. I had to do a long road trip on an Interstate with heavy truck traffic in a driving rain storm and those 2 little lights on the rear of a tractor's trailer are useless. I set the distance to 3, set my max comfortable speed for the wet roads and 'attached' myself to the back of a truck.

If the truck downshifted or otherwise dropped speed without applying the brakes, thus activating the brake lights, the D already sensed the closing speed and reduced its speed as well.
This is a good point as the FCC in my previous 2011 DD saved me driving over an MG sports car near Dover as I simply did not make out the rear lights of the little blighter :-) and I confess to using it in fog too.

Effectively using the ACC in town can have some undesired effects, but frankly I do like this feature. It reacts slightly faster than I do which is worth a couple of meters braking distance. In town though there are a number of obstacles that get it to react. But it does serve as great protection from those women who push pushchairs in front of you to get you stop at pedestrian crossings....

While trailing I like it on the motorways as it brakes and slows relatively gently, which is good. It is just the sometimes unexpected "slam on mode" that I turn off while trailing and to be fair that only happens in close traffic.

In heavy rain I am not sure that Cruise Control is a good idea as aqua-planing may be an issue, or rather once aqua-planing starts, you would not benefit from a lift off throttle to control it.... I do not yet know how the ACC would react to this, any one had experience?

The instant a wheel speed difference is detected, the system deactivates. The traction control system does a great job handling the rest.
