Default Air Conditioning Smell

My 2014 DD has 1500 miles on it and as of recent I have started to notice a musty/wet dirty sock type smell from the AC vents. More noticeable when I press the recirculation button. Anyone else experience this?

Common problem with all cars. However, if you are getting the musty smell while NOT using recirculate, then you may have a clogged drain line. When you park the car and shut it off, look to see if you get a puddle of condensate under the car near the right front wheel. If yes, then you should just stop using recirculate until the smell goes away. I live in Houston and never use recirculate just to avoid the smell. My wife uses it in her M37 and I can smell the diff when I get in her car. Keep us posted.

Good to know about the recirculate option, I always just leave mine on auto. I would get the smell from time to time as well and I am in Houston too. I am trading mine in for a 14 this week though.

I don't see how the puddle has anything to do with recirc. Condensation will come off of any cold compressor.

That smell comes from a system where some of that condensate inevitably collects in the system and mold/mildew can grow. The stealer can blow the system out and get rid of it. I had that done and it made a big difference. There are some luxury cars that don't require this. What they do is run the fan after the car has been sitting a while to dry out the condensate pan. It works really well.

The puddle I am referring to comes from the condensation coming off the evaporator inside the system, not the compressor in the engine compartment. There is a drain line from the air box. If it gets clogged, what you describe is what happens, i.e. moisture builds up. If it is dripping and therefore not clogged, then the mildew buildup is likely from overuse of recirculate. Yes you can go to the dealer to have it "blown out". My suggestion hopefully prevents it from happening in the first place.

You and I are referring to the same thing. But re-circ has nothing to do with it. And I'm not referring to blowing out a clogged hole, moister inevitably collects on the lines and ducts that is unable to drain out the hole. If you don't dry that out, mold and mildew builds up over time. If you were to get in your car 30-60 minutes after every time you've used the AC and turned on the fan (without AC), you could keep it dry. Otherwise you will inevitably have to have the dealer get the smell out.
