Uh, the current Grand Cherokee shares the same platform as the Durango and sells better.

Uh, the Durango was discontinued in 2008 and not sold again until the 2011 model year.
UHHH...The wheelbase of the 3rd gen Durango is longer than the Grand Cherokee. It has three rows of seating compared to the Grand Cherokee's two rows..in case you hadnt noticed.
Indications are that Jeep will share this longer "platform" with Wagoneer.

UHHH..In October 2008, as demand for full-size SUVs fell off, Chrysler announced that the shutdown of the Newark Assembly facility, which produced the Durango and Chrysler Aspen, would be moved up to the end of 2008, thereby ending production of the Aspen and Durango for the 2009 model year. Production ceased on December 19, 2008. This effectively ended production of the Aspen and Durango Hybrids for the 2009 model year. On August 16, 2010, Dodge released an Internet site and teaser photos of the third generation of Dodge Durango. The new Durango is built alongside of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee at the Jefferson Ave. Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan.

When considering holdovers on sale in 2009, a one year hiatus brought on by being almost flattened by the automotive industry crisis of 2008–2010 due to severe recession does not spell discontinuation. And they came back from the short hiatus going all in with a completely new product from the 2nd gen.

Now then, splitting hairs aside, as I said..Durango still sells well. Dodge has had an SUV since the 70s, Durango since 94, theyve always had an SUV as long as theres been SUVs...

As long as they continue to sell well, they will save themselves and we will see them beyond 2017.

averaging 5000 units at an average price of 35,000 is not something Dodge will shut down.

Angry Very Disappointing

I'm not sure who ultimately makes these decisions but I feel they are not good ones. Recently the Dodge Caravan was axed from the family hauling category. Instead of re-creating it's image (like the commercials) by bringing back the ES, it's just easier to end production. I feel if Chrysler made the Town & Country the luxury model and Dodge was the sportier model it would be different enough to attract buyers. Same holds true for Durango. Many buyers don't want an all out 4 wheel drive off-road vehicle. Many, like myself, are looking for something that has an optional AWD, sits higher than a car, can carry both extra passengers and items, but be more 'road' worthy and sporty at the same time. Again I think if Chrysler worked a little harder at each divisions' image as well as their buyers needs, the Caravan and Durango wouldn't be in this position.
