End of Warranty - What to do?
So my 2013 Durango warranty expires in July. I've had a few big ticket items repaired since I bought it. Normally, since most major repairs don't come until after the 5 year mark, an after the purchase extended warranty isn't worth it. As an aside, I smacked it into a curb during a snowstorm for $4K of suspension/drivetrain work this winter. Common sense says trade it but I like the truck. Does anyone have thoughts or input on issues after the factory warranty?
here's my opinion, I only buy used cars to start with. most of the cars I buy don't have an existing warranty when I get them. my D did and currently still does have the 100k mile powertrain warranty but the bumper to bumper warranty has expired. and I'm fine with driving it.
a lot depends on the numbers though. my situation might be pretty different from yours numbers-wise. I feel I got a really good deal and paid under $20k for mine. so I don't mind driving it. also I always buy D/C vehicles and I always find good forums like this one to frequent. I can handle most basic repairs myself and the knowledge, and forknowledge about issues like the TIPM recall, that I get from these forums gives me the confidence to drive my D for a long time.
so a lot is up to you and how comfortable you are with your financial situation in the D and how your repair experience has been with it.
my vote is to keep driving it unless you find something newer to replace it that you like more than the D.

Warranties are like gambling in Vegas. The house always wins. Individual results may vary, but in the big picture the company selling the warranty does so to separate you from your money.
So unless you truly know some big repair (one that will be covered) is due, I think a person is better off making sure they have a credit card (or line of home equity credit, or savings) available for emergencies and NEVER EVER buy a warranty on anything. In the long run you should come out ahead pocketing the $.
Owning used vehicles or keeping the one you bought new for a long time is generally a good financial move. However, some repairs are inevitable with older vehicles.
