Thanks all. I think coldsteel described it exactly. I had the booster recall addressed but this didn't start happening until a few months later. The timing coincided with hot spring days so I thought there might have been a correlation with outside temps. There's no loss of performance, it just catches you off guard when you hop in and the brake pedal is rock hard. No issues if I use the remote start which makes sense. Guess we wait and see.
