Default Towing car hauler with 2014 R/T

I have a 2014 RT RWD with factory tow package and aftermarket brake controller. I've been towing a 16' open trailer, but now I need an enclosed car hauler.

I am going to get a 20' or 24' lightweight aluminum trailer 2500/2900 lbs respectively. The front is 8.5'w x7'h. I will also get load distribution and sway controls. I will be hauling a 2700 lb car and about 500-1000 pounds of tools, tires, etc. I would really like to have the 24' but I'm concerned about side wind and passing 18-wheelers with such a large side surface area.

Does anyone here have experience towing 20' or 24' car haulers that they can share.

I towed a 24' enclosed trailer (8.5' wide) with my 2011 Durango Crew with 5.7L and factory tow package. My trailer empty is around 3600 lbs IIRC. With the Durango I primarily towed a couple of UTVs and a few tools, so total weight of my setup was probably similar to what you're looking to tow. I do not have a weight distribution hitch or anti-sway on on my setup and the Durango did okay. I never really hauled long distance but did get several highway miles in and the Durango did okay. I also towed a 30' travel trailer with my Durango which does have weight distribution and anti-sway. Towing the travel trailer was sketchy at best.

Ultimately due to the sketchiness of towing the travel trailer, I rather quickly traded the Durango in for a Ram 1500 which does a much better job of towing both the enclosed trailer (including with a car inside versus the two UTVs) and the travel trailer. But, if all I had at the time was the 24' enclosed trailer, I was happy with how the Durango did and probably would have kept the Durango as that might be my favorite of the 18 or so vehicles I've owned.

Thanks for the feedback. I test pulled a 24' trailer today. It was empty but had no load distribution or sway control. The 24' felt like it would be a handful when loaded even with the LD/SC added. I plan to pull it anywhere from 3-11 hours, and that's a long time to fight a trailer.

I believe I'm going to get the 20' with 'escape hatch' side. I'll post my experience once I have some highway miles on it.
