Thermostats
I am still not sure why everyone is running a cooler thermostat. These engines are built with tolerances that are met when they are up to stock temp. It is the sole reason you dont beat on your truck until it is warmed up. Increased load while the motor parts are not up to temp causes premature wear. Running an engine too cool does the same thing, only not as bad, but all the time.
As a cold engine is very inefficient. Combustion heat loss is greater due to great temperature differential.

With all this talk About it being good and then being bad should I put a Jet 180 on my truck or not? I have CAI and New exahust and my next mods are Hughes Plenum repair kit then a superchip and possibly headers
Wingknutks is 100% correct. You should NOT be using anything less then a 200 degree T-Stat in these trucks unless you have reprogrammed the computer to compensate for it and re-gap your plugs AND live in a location where it's VERY hot every day AND you are subjecting the truck to heavy towing loads.
Putting a 180 degree thermostat in a stock Ram will lower your MPG because your engine will think the truck is not warmed up. And at 180 degrees, you will be burning off a good deal of the moisture in the oil either. So you will need to do more frequent oil changes. You may also run into emmissions issues which depending on where you live could be an issue.
Save your money and don't fall victim to yet another pointless mod for a mostly stock truck. You are NOT going to see any HP gains you will notice.

Years back I had a car that over heated after the buildup and i was told that because of the increase of horsepower I would have to run a 160 thermastat. Well after fighting an over heating problem everytime I was in traffic or had to slow down a friend told me that i should run a 190.
He explained that the 190 would allow the engine to help disapate the heat and that the engine would run better. So I changed it to 190, then I tested it by driving my car into the Valley ( San Fernando)when the temp was 104. I drove 20 miles to the valley on the freeway, pulled off the freeway and drove around the area for about 30 minutes then stopped my car at a 7-11 for a drink. I left my car running while I went into the store and got a drink. The whole time my car never went above 200. No over heating problems.

Jet 180 here. Also have an efan so in traffic on a hot day the temp may climb as high as 210F. Having the 180 stst does keep the trans. about 10-15F cooler once everything is at temp. I have a short commute so most days the tstat barely even opens once. Wiping condensate from the oil cap and 2500 mile (this is 6 months) oil changes are a part of life anyway so a slightly lower operating temp is no biggie.
