Default Backup Cam Install

Installed my backup cam today, and I thought I'd share some of the ideas I had.

I went with the Boyo cam that bolts to your license plate; I meant to order the one that was built into a license plate frame, but I clicked on the wrong one. Oh well. The only thing I don't like about this one is that if you simply bolt it to the plate, the wire will get compressed against it. I solved that problem by drilling a hole in the plate behind where the wire goes, and threading the wire through the plate.

Next step was to find the backup switch wire. I've got the wiring diagrams for the 2007, and I think I found my backup switch connector on the tranny, but the wire colors didn't match. No problem; since I'm running the cam wire from one end of the truck to the other, I just ran another wire and tapped into my 7-pin trailer jack. It's the center wire (white with light green stripe on the 2008).

Next was how to run the wires into the cab. After scratching my head while crawling around under the truck, I decided to bring it up through the edge of the floorboard, right above where my speaker wires are running. It's very easy to get to, just pull up the molding and lift the carpet.

The cam came with a grommet for the hole, but I drilled it a bit too small. I wrapped the wires with electrical tape, and filled in the hole with black silicone. Lots of room to run the wires under the truck; if you can't figure out how to route the wires, you've got no business trying to install it yourself.

The cam wires have a RCA plug, a 12v wire, and a ground wire. The backup switch wire is for the head unit (Kenwood DNX-5120); some people wire a manual switch. The cam works great with the head unit; it comes on when I drop it in reverse, and I have a button on the head unit to switch it on. I've got a nice, clean picture, and you can adjust the cam up/down angle to suit your own taste. I haven't tried it out at night yet, I'll up
