Lightbulb What is the purpose of a fog light relay?

Just bought a pair of fog lights to mount behind my grille this weekend and on the box it said that it is recomended that a relay be installed. I was wondering the purpose of the relay is and if I can get away without it and just installing a seperate switch

A standard automotive 4 or 5 pin 30 or 40A will be suitable for fogs. You can pick one up at Radioshack for about $6 or $7 or you can buy a couple online for $10 or so.

40A Bosch at Advance Auto, about seven bucks and change or you can get funky like I did on my Jeep and buy a wireless relay with two key fobs online for $14 shipped and say screw running a switch.

I now have the key fobs for remote operation and programmed the unused button of my HomeLink to operate the lights from inside the vehicle...
