I've had four sets of nerfs on various trucks I've had (well, five if you include the black set I had on my current truck for about 6 months until I decided to do an about-face and go stainless and diamond plate instead of black).
Two sets were NOT Westin and those were the ONLY sets I've had issues with. One set of chrome ones pitted and rusted to hell in two years (and I was living in Georgia and not a winter/salt state). Can't remember the brand, I bought them at a local truck accessory shop and this was about 15 years ago.
Another set (Bully's I believe), were black and the powdercoat would scratch off very easily, not to mention I had a step pad fly off on the highway on me.
I've had my current Westins (stainless) for almost 5 years, finish still looks like new, pads still firmly attached. About the only thing I could pick out is that the black pads are a little faded from the southern sun. Never had an issue with any other Westins I've had either, but I usually trade or sell my trucks after 4 years, so this set is the longest I've had them.
Spend the little extra and get the Westins...
As far as finish/color, yeah a stainless set will outlast anything else, and I'd think chrome would outlast black powerdercoat, but if taken care of, you should be able get 10 years out of black. Of course black is chearper, so I'd say the color/finish is completely personal preference...
