Old ring and pinion in new ('03) truck
My truck shelled the pinion shaft the other night. It's been coming on for 60k miles, so I wasn't surprised. It couldn't have come at a worse time financially, though. I have absolutely no money, a situation I haven't been in in at least 10 years. It's the 9.25 rear with 3.9 gears.
Here's my question: Can I get a ring and pinion from a junkyard from a 70's vehicle and expect it to work? I know there's an ABS ring between the ring gear and carrier. Is the factory ring gear thinner to allow for this?
FWIW the ring and pinion wear were what made it go out. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.
Thanks in advance for any replies,
Steve.

No, the design was changed slightly in the 90's. I found this out when shopping for gears for my old Monaco, which had a 9.25 in it. I have 114,000 on my original ring and pinion with no problems. If I was prepared to throw the Dana in sooner I'd sell you my original.
X2 - someone is ALWAYS trying to sell a set of gears they just upgraded from, between here and DT.
here is a good example.
