behind the grill lights
I have a 2004 1500, and I want to put the driving lights behind the grill. The question I have is should I go with the 4inch 5inch or 6inch in size lights. I was looking at the piaa510 4inch round white driving lights and they seem to fit perfect between the two red plastic peices on my grill or is the 4 inch to small of a light. Any input would be great. Thanks
I think for behind the grill that 4" is a little small. Although PIAA are a good quality light. The light of choice for behind the grill is usually the Hella 500 which is I believe about a 6" light but with a very flat profile.
I had a set on my truck for a while, but got a hell of a deal on some stainless 130 watt lights that I won a bid on ebay for. So I'm running the Hellas on my Jeep now.
At only 55 watts the Hellas throw off a surprising amount of light and cost under $60 for the pair (with full wiring kit) at WalMart. You can also upgrade the bulbs to 100 watts for around $5 a pop.
It's hard to beat the quality of these German designed lights for the money. There are better lights out there, for sure, but you'd pay $125+ EACH for anything that is significantly better, IMO...

The Hella 500 uses a standard H3 bulb. WallyWorld or any auto parts store has them.
Keep in mind however, that you will be close to doubling your amp draw and wire thickness, relay and fuse(s) need to reflect that. The included 40A relay is fine (still overkill actually) but the wires and fuses may need to be upgraded.
I don't run any of the included parts when I do a Hella 500 (I've done one for me and like 5 installs for others). I buy my wire in bulk spools from the hardware/car audio guy at the local flea market. I'll run like 14 gauge wire and I'll even strip off about a foot and upgrade the wire inside the lights if I'm gonna do 100 watt bulbs.
Probably over-kill, but that's just me. I keep the thin a$$ wire that comes in most light "kits" and save it to run switches that only pull about a third of an amp. The thin wire is perfect for that...
