Default Update on gear swap

Here's the original thread:
https://dodgeforum.com/forum/3rd-gen...-progress.html

Basically, I took it to the shop because of the whining and it just not feeling right. As it so happens, tightening the side backlash adjusters to 75 ft/lbs could very well be wrong. It was too tight and heated up the axle shaft quite a bit. Also, spider gears were wearing on the pinion mate shaft a little bit which also wasn't right. Bearings suffered no damage - thank God, but note should be taken, when I loosened the adjusters to remove the differential, it definitely did not feel like 75 ft/lbs worth of force loosening them - as a matter of fact, felt much less - more like 20 I'd say.

Mechanic said that would most likely be the cause of the lower pitched whining at 45 MPH and as I recall, seemed to increase the longer I drove it ... the heating up of the shaft would only make sense.

He checked my pinion depth shims and they were dead on at 0.035 which is good news but asked to have him replace both the front and rear pinion bearings and races with the new Timkens I bought. Install new crush sleeve and pinion nut I bought from the dealer and hopefully be good to go. I'm glad I didn't drive it that much, maybe 50 miles in 5-8 mile increments.

Hopefully, I'll get the truck back tomorrow.
