3500 '03 4x4 totaled, buy back or not?
Hey all hope no one pulled any April Fools Jokes on anyone today!! (Not major anyway)
Back to the topic at hand, I posted an RIP thread a little over 2 weeks ago when I was broadsided. The other person was doing about 55 mph and hit me square in the doors (pass. side) pushed the cab over to the frame and then bent the frame. Anyway, after 2+ weeks I should be getting a settlement figure in the next day or so. My question is should I buy back the truck from the insurance company? I can buy it back to either part it out or sell it whole.
The one thing I will need to do if I do buy it back is get it either parted or sold in short order, as my wife will not stand for it being around long!!
It is a '03 (133K miles), 4x4, QCLB, dually with "C" code (HO) engine, 48RE auto (30 K miles on complete rebuild), SLT. The truck still started and ran after the accident but when I pushed on the accelerator, the engine did not rev up. Easy to understand as the cab is +/- 24 inches to the left of where it is supposed to be! Mechanically I looked at it the axles (F & R) were not touched, the transmission and transfer case are good. The drive train is fine but the cab and frame are screwed. Both seats are messed up on the right side the left side doors are ok.
Help I need to decide and sign the papers the first of next week!
If it makes any difference, I am located just south of Carlisle, PA.
Thanks a ton (3500),
Bob
PS. I am going to stick in a couple of pictures to give you an idea of the condition.

As a veteran of several totaled vehicles, I'd advise against buying it back. You'd need the time, tools, location, and experience to part it out yourself. Then you'd have to deal with taking payments (or the lack thereof in case of deadbeat buyers), packing and shipping the parts. This is a massive PITA for the relatively small profit you'd make.
The drivetrain is the only item of real worth. Do you really want to handle the removal, sale, and freight shipment of these items?
I'd take the check and start looking for another CTD to replace it. Let the salvage yard it goes to handle the pick-a-part chore!

Lets see some pics, How much do they want to sell you the truck for? Your right John M, it will be a pain in the *** to part the truck out, but then again if you have the time it might be worth it. Ebay can be your best friend for a couple months, then scrap the rest that you cant sell.
yeah i wouldnt buy it back my friend and i bought back his s10 after he totaled it (broadsided just like yours) thinking we could make some money we sold a door and the grill and eventually took it up and scrapped it and took the loss
If you can do all the work pulling parts, why not?
I'm guessing it would go to an auction, it'd have to be cheaper than the tranny's worth (that'll be your biggest $$)
Other than that, the other parts will have to be pretty cheap as they do have a bit of mileage on them. The motor's probably worth a lot too (5.9 cummins correct?)
All depends on price. Do the math on parts you'll probably sell vs. hours of work, the hourly wage will tell you what you'll get.

Parting a ride out is tiresome and exhausting work. Everyone wants something but half done like the price. Plus they want pics and then there is the time involved in stripping it and boxing everything and shipping. Just a PITA although if you have the time then I do advise it as it can be lucrative.
Being I just did a hydroboost swap and posted a thread on it, Im sure several guys would want to buy that setup to follow my steps.
