That's awesome, the most I've ever personally seen on an odometer of a vehicle with a 360 in it was a Grand Cherokee with something like 315,000 on the odometer. A guy in my hunting club has around 280,000 on his 2nd Gen Ram with a 5.9 Magnum in it.

But there was a thread a couple years ago, I can't remember if it was here or another forum about 1,000,000 mile CTD trucks and a guy piped in that he just hit 500,000 miles on his 5.9 gasser...

 

Thanks for all the input guys, appreciate it. Ya the gas mileage is absolutely killing me, i often drive 150 km a day to a worksite and back and im getting 350 k to a tank. Putting me at 95$ every 2-3 days in gas costs. Looks like i can save myself alot by switching to a hemi and not to mention the power gains. Already have some offers on the truck, so lookin good!

 

the magnum's limit is the baby cam they put OE in them.. if you bump that baby you can easily get another benji out of it.. but to do so you'll be addressing heads as well.. and springs/valves.. If you do that you may as well hit LT headers, and a decent intake (which is silly expensive due to lack of popularity in aftermarket market- M1 for around $400, FI Air-Gap for around $600).. then you would HAVE to have it tuned to match all the components (specifically the cam)- and hope to reach the 350 @ crank mark, while still delivering just slightly improved MPG's than a stock 360M... huh...

the hemi kicks that at you bone stock..

there is but one comparison, and this is not a shot at the hemi crowd, (I'm not aiming at your crown jewels when I say this in other words)- - - the 360M is floggin' bullet proof. they will run forever- maybe not as well as they could, and maybe not efficient, but they will run as long as you want to run them.. and they are floggin' reliable (after addressing the one inherit issue with magnums which is the plenum gasket/pan situation)...

I have an '02 5.9L Magnum QC 4x4.. The 46RE tranny is weak, and there is nothing that can be done about that but beef it up.. other than that, I changed gears to 4.56:1, e-fan, air-gap, double timing chain, 52mm FM TB, dual exhaust, shorty headers, 1.7H&S Rocker Rollers, SCT Tune, III gen FMS injectors.. shoot, pretty much all of the bolt-ons, and sitting on 35" tires and a 4~5" RC suspension lift.. I live in the flat-lands.. I get around 13.5~14.5 OVERALL MPG's.. that is astounding, I'm learning, compared to my 2nd generation brethren who are stuck with basically the same rig.

I too wish I had a bone stock Hemi.. I could get the same mileage and have a LOT more power than I have right now.

 

had a 98 grand cherokee with the one year production 5.9 in it better cam had to run 91 octane from the factory and factory 3" exhaust, it was awesome, fast as hell (fastest production suv in 98) but i couldn't pass the pumps 100 bucks to fill depending on gas prices and only got 340kms to a tank, my 07 sbrc hemi gets around 700kms to a tank on the highway.. hemi isnt probably much faster either the jeep was AWD hooked up hard, hemi in 2wd just smokes the tires lol

 

A Hemi truck probably not faster than a GC with a 5.9??? How about NOWHERE NEAR as fast. I raced a Hemi 4x2 truck on I95 with my Grand Cherokee Overland, 4.7 HO and AWD with lockers front and rear. Left him for dead! Let off, let him catch me and while he was still WOT, I passed him again and walked away, AT 3/4 throttle. I know how much gas he was giving it too cause we were on the phone during the whole thing.

I had a 97 2wd,5.9L,3.55 gear,hard bed cover, town 12mpg,trip to texas and back,best 19mpg at 70-75 mph. Now 2005 daytona edition 1500,2wd. 12-14mpg town,best hi-way 18-21 from FL to AZ 70-80 mph.

 

I have now owned 5 2500's with the 360, and 3 with the hemi
Now these are 3/4 tons, autos
I average with all them about the same gas millage of about 10-11 in town, 12-13 highway, and about 8-10 towing
5.9 or hemi, no difference

yes the hemi makes more Hp but it really makes the most at Rpm's way up there, so the 5.9 and the 5.7, in useable rpm's not as huge a difference

I have pulled same type of toys and equipment with all my trucks, and the 5.9 actually seemed to pull better on hills, without having to rev up over 5 grand! to do it

But the hemi is a much more modern motor, long life, well have to see how long it takes to be replace, that 5.9 had a very long run!

and gas mpg from a 1/2 ton to a 3/4 ton, are huge, so in seat of pants power feeelings!
I know of a lot more 5.9 with over 200,000 miles on than any new hemi< so!

 

I drive an 01 1500 laramie. I only have about 118k on it even though we've had it since 03. However, we have beat the living **** out of it on hunting trails. Only thing that needed replaced was the front suspension and thats just personal preference to have something beefier. It's my everyday driver now and I get about 15-16mpg in town and I even get about 17-18mpg on the highway. I personally love the old 5.9 because like HammerZ71 said earlier, it is a frickin tank. Not to mention it tows just as well as my dads 05 Chevy 2500 Duramax and gets better mileage doing it, especially uphill lol.
