Default Tires 275/70/17 vs 265/70/17

Its time for new rubber on my 03 QC 4x4, I am runnung 265/70/17 now and really like the mpg I get with the tires and 3.92 rear gears. The truck was listed new with 275's my question is whats the advantage if any in running the taller 275's, will I see a jump in highway mpg? cost wise they are close for either set.

Well, the stock tire was about 32 1/4" x 10 3/4" and the 265s are about 31 1/2" x 10 1/2". If you've not re-calibrated your speedometer then most of the MPGs you "like" might be an illusion, since your speedo will register higher and your odometer will register more miles than you are actually traveling (and your truck is showing more miles on it than it actually have).

It's not major, but the tire height difference is enough to throw off calculations by a bit...

Twenty some years ago I would have considered Big rubber, now I'm a bit more conservative in tire size. Lots of tire shops are pushing the Wrangler ATS tires....every thing I read here tells me they are a bad choice whats the story there?

Me too, twenty years ago I was runnin' 37s on 15" wheels, although I don't think I'll ever go less than 35s, at least while I'm still able to get in and out of the truck.

Tire shops push what they can make the most profit on. Goodyear and BFGs are the biggest sellers in the US, and I've had terrible luck with both. Over-price, average tires at best.

For a 4x4 that sees mostly pavement but can still hang on the trail or do light mud, it's still tough to beat the Nitto Terra Grappler...
