It's not like you hear about 03's crapping out every other day here on DF.
The 03 lets you remove torque management by removing 1 wire. It is true that you can't change shift points, and I always like to tweak. It hasn't gotten in my way though, normal driving or towing, and I've never been outrun by a similar truck - Dodge or other makers.
