Default Need assistance with installation to retain steering wheel controls

I put a new Sony head unit in my truck tonight, and we attempted to install the Pacific Accessories interface to retain use of the stock steering wheel controls. It requires splicing into a grey and white wire in the steering column. I am unable to remove the steering column cover due to a metal bar for the hand controls I use covering the center screw. We found a grey and white wire, and followed it up into the bottom of the steering column as far as we could. There are no other grey and white wires around.

Is this the correct wire? Is there another wire hiding up in there, somewhere? Is it necessary to splice that far up under the steering column for some reason? If that's not the wire, I think I'm just out of luck...

Um im not sure about the hardwire method, when i used to work at a shop we used the interface from Metra.
