The boot on the CV end of my front drive shaft where it connects to the transfer case is torn, is this a common problem with the 04 1500s? Any easy fix or do I have to replace the whole shaft?

 

I had new struts put in a few months ago and when i got home realized the shop ripped BOTH front axle boots (nearest the wheels). They said they would take care of it and they did. I asked if the boots could be replaced and they said "It's easier and cheaper to just install new axles" and from what i have found through researching, i think they are right.

They have these two piece boots you basically glue together to replace a ripped boot, but they don't work well. You can buy a new original style boot, but to install it, you have to pull the axle anyhow. And you need a special tool to install the bands that hold it in place. I have had more then one mechanic tell me it's better and easier to just replace the axle. The reasons being is 1, its actually less work since the new axle is completeley assembled and lubricated. 2, you don't know if the grease was exposed to the elements when the boot was ripped. You could have sand and grit in the joint requiring cleaning and re greasing. A complete axle can be had for around $75.00. A good quality boot can cost $30-$40. So you might just want to consider buying the complete axle.

I did replace one torn outer CV boot, on my 03 4x4 Hemi and it was a nightmare!
The grease goes everywhere and if there is any on the joint when you put the new boot on and crimp the steel CV boot band on, it will slip off. Trust me on that one.
2 CV boot kits later....because the steel band only comes with a complete CV boot kit and not sold separately, lots of dirt and grease with lots of time and frustration spent trying to get it done right. ARGHH!!!
I'll always buy a complete CV shaft with boots installed in the future.

It's not too common, I've been off-road with my truck almost as much as it's been on-road and mine are still in factory new condition. Although it's not too terribly difficult to catch one on something sharp and have it tear. It's a LOT more common on leveled trucks that put the CV at higher than stock angles.

Yeah I have come across alot of boot ripped threads for those drive axles, and I'm sure you have come across many more than I lol. Haven't seen much in the way of the boot on the propeller shaft being torn.

 

It's the boot up at the CV end. I'm not sure if it's serviceable or not.
