Assuming you have a half ton (1500) that's about right. That said, I've done two loads of river rock in my bed (pre-air bags, pre-lift and still with the stock shocks) that the place I bought them from estimated at about 2100 lbs. each load.

Four miles from my old house and I BABIED it the whole way, not only hit the bumpstops on every road abnormality but could hear rubber scrubbing somewhere in the rear.

Realistically, I'd hold it to 1500 lbs. if you don't have to venture too far, come down as the distance and roads dictate.

Air bags would BIG TIME help and would be a real wise $200 investment if this is not a one time thing. One of the best investments I ever made...

Expanding on the air bags, a set of 2000# capacity Air Lift Ride Control bags would run you $200'ish (retail is about $329 - I paid $178 in 2006). Unlike "helper springs" the air bags are adjustable so that your ride isn't rough as hell when unladen.

Other bags are available up to 5000# capacity from both Air Lift and Firestone but you need to remember, just because the bags will support the weight, suspension components won't, so I found the 2000# bags to be plenty. Also, I could not find ANY 5000# bags for lifted applications at the time - the Ride Controls will mount no matter if you're stock or have a suspension or body lift.
