I have a 2004 1500 Hemi Sport 5.7l I have confirmed that the alternator is starting to go bad... but I'm not sure what alternator amperage I have.... so I was wondering if I could get away with a lower cheaper alternator...or not. Anyone able to tell me what alternator amperage I need or what the truck comes with stock from the factory. One guy tells me he has one for $180 another guy from another place says $119....who is right? Why the big price difference?

 

136amp and 150amp. 136a standard, 150a snowplow package. Price all depends on amps and brand. If you have a lot of electronics or tow alot id go with 150, if not 136 should be enough for about anything.

 

are you sure it would be a good idea to just stick a 150 amp alternator in there if you had stock wiring? isn't the line fuse for 140?

as far as finding out what you have you should be able to call up the dealers and with the last 8 digits of your vin they should be able to tell you what alternator you have.

 

Im not too sure on the fuse. All our service and tow trucks have upgraded alternators on them for lights and accessories and run just fine. It shouldnt be a problem.

 

If you dont think the Alt has been replaced then you can request a build sheet from a Dealership or online (dont have url off offhand) which will detail what the factory Alternator is.

Mine was 136a from factory and 8 years later i had it replaced with with a 180a.

 

Current draw is current draw. Changing the alternator to a higher-capacity will not stress the system.

Most likely you have a 136ah. You can put the alternate 160ah unit in with ease. That's my plan if ever I need one. So far, it would seem unlikely. Heck, my OEM battery is almost nine years old.
