Unhappy Torque Converter or Governor Solenoids

Hello! I have a 2004 Ram 2500 5.9L automatic. It has an aftermarket intake, a 5” exhaust and a Bully Dog Power Pup on it

The issues I’m currently having are:
  1. Hunting from 1st to 2nd under light and heavy throttle
  2. Sometimes when taking off from stop the engine will rev, but I’ll only pull away very slowly
  3. Surging when under cruise control on the highway, light but definately noticeable

So, I’ve been mulling over all of the Dodge diesel BBS’s out there and have come to a few diagnosis that seemed common and wanted to run them by you all to see if you agree. My conclusion is to perform the following items first:

  1. Put in a new Borg Warner governor solenoid and new governor pressure sensor
  2. While the tranny is cracked adjust the bands

If that doesn’t do it, I’ve read part of the problem may be the TPS. At that point I would think the torque converter may be hosed. What do you think?

Thanks for the advise!

Welcome to DF and the Awesome world of Cummins.

Yes the BW 50185 and new pressure transduce will hopefully fix your 1-2 problem and the band adjustment should fix the take off issue. When you adjust the bands, 1-2 is on the outside of the trans below drivers seat. If you have less than 2 threads showing, then it is time for a new band. The other band has to be done when the pan is dropped.

Try the bands and new sensors, if that doesnt fix, then further actions may be needed. Also, dont unleash your Power Pup too much or you will have major problems when all that torque hits a stock trans and shreds everything in there.
