Default debating on trading ram for excursion or putting some $ into it to tow better. ideas?

Hey Guys,

So i've lurked on here forever, but i don't really post. I have a 2003 ram 1500 hemi 4x4 that i use as a 3rd vehicle and as a tow rig.

I keep debating on trading it for an excursion. A guy i know wants to trade his 01 v10 excursion with 78k miles on it and with the good gears (4.30's?) for my ram. He needs a truck and i hate my 3.55 gearing....

also it'd be nice to have an excursion for the room. i could camp out of it too...

But if i keep my truck, i was thinking of going 4.56's and maybe a cam?

here's my trade ad

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/3452947725.html

that shows the truck...

any thoughts?

Hmmm... thats a real nice looking truck. Looks like you've put some money into it replaceing some parts. If you got a truck cap then you could throw an air matress back there probably. Might need a little heater too I suppose for cold nights, that'd be the advantage of the excursion. Personally I'd rather drive a truck, if you spent a little money putting in the right gears then I think you'd be all set. Of course, for what you want it for, sounds like the excursion would be a decent choice too. What's the tow rating on one of those excursions? Seems like you'd be better with the truck, but I don't know much about the excursions.

Also, seems like you take pretty good care of your truck, if i was gonna trade that i'd be sure to try to find something with the maintenance schedule if possible.

get a diesel excursion if you want it for towing. you will probably get a little better mpg while you're at it.

i'm pulling about 6500 lbs-7000 lbs. the diesel excursions are outrageously priced. 18-20 grand! that's insane.

I don't know what i could get for my truck cashwise. But i doubt 10k...

i like my truck. but all i've done is fix stuff on it since i got it (all pre-existing issues from the first owner).

then again, it seems like i've finally fixed everything wrong with it lol

if it had better gears i think i'd like it a lot more

I guess you have to decide if you really want a truck or SUV. You know the shape your truck is in and if you get into something 10+ years old (diesel or not) you could be starting from scratch fixing someone else problems again. If you throw 4.56's in your truck, it'll make quick work of 6500-7000lbs. I tow a lot more than that and it won't even kick out of 4th on small inclines. Can tow in 5th on the flats but I use my tow haul so on 4th all day long.

Triton V10 SUCK gas and your not gaining a advanatge towing or with performance with the Excursion due to the intial whight of this pig, you will be broke in no time fluleing up this Ford and The v10 has the same spark plug issues breaking inside the head, or coughing up a plug as the 5.4.

Its worth it to get a diesel if the Excursion is your ticket ..
