I have some big pieces of hardwood that haven't been split for firewood yet over the rear axle on my 2wd. Will I do a number on the suspension leaving weight back there all winter? I'm not sure an exact weight but I'd estimate 300-400 lbs.
Keep in mind many carry more than that with a tool box and a few tools in it all year round. I know my folding hard cover, fifth wheel rails/hardware, and sheet of plywood to cover them probably comes out to 150-200#. Having a few more 100# back there will not be noticable. As for mpg etc, odds are our 2wd with extra weight are lighter than most 4x4 anyway.
Just make sure it is secure and not going anywhere.. I know when I used to have a few logs in my bed that when in a turn if they decided to roll or shift a bit it made for an interesting ride.

Forgot about that. Yeah, I got a tool box with about 1200lbs of tools in it that I keep in it year round. Only time I take it out is when I'm going to get a load of fill dirt or something like that for landscaping at home. (basically when I need to use the full size of the bed.)
